When an Air Conditioner is running but the home is not cooling the way it should, guessing is not enough. A good HVAC diagnostic starts by checking several parts of the system and seeing how they work together.
For this Air Conditioning project, the technician inspected both the outdoor and indoor sections of the central AC system. The work included checking refrigerant pressures with a Uniweld manifold gauge set, inspecting the indoor air handler, looking at the blower motor and blower wheel, and examining the evaporator coil.
This type of detailed inspection helps find problems that can reduce Cooling, increase energy use, or place unnecessary stress on the Heating and Cooling equipment.
Checking Refrigerant Pressure at the Outdoor AC Unit
The first photos show a Uniweld manifold gauge set connected to the outdoor Air Conditioner. A manifold gauge is a tool HVAC technicians use to measure refrigerant pressure on the high-pressure and low-pressure sides of a cooling system.
The blue gauge is normally used for the low-pressure side, while the red gauge is used for the high-pressure side. These readings give the technician important information about how refrigerant is moving through the system.
Refrigerant is the material inside an AC system that absorbs heat indoors and carries that heat outside. The technician does not simply look at one pressure number and decide whether the system needs refrigerant. Pressures need to be considered along with the type of refrigerant, outdoor temperature, indoor conditions, airflow, and other measurements.
This testing is an important part of professional AC repair in Las Vegas because an incorrect refrigerant charge can reduce system performance.
Inspecting the Indoor Air Handler
The next part of the inspection focused on the indoor air handler. The air handler contains several important parts responsible for moving cooled air through the home.
The photos show the refrigerant lines entering the cabinet along with PVC drain piping. The larger copper refrigerant line is insulated because it becomes cold while the system is operating. Keeping this line properly insulated helps prevent unwanted heat from entering the refrigerant before it returns to the outdoor unit.
The white PVC piping is part of the condensate drainage system. When warm indoor air moves across the cold evaporator coil, moisture in the air turns into water. This is called condensation. The drain system carries that water away from the air handler.
A blocked condensate drain can cause water leaks and may even shut down some Air Conditioning systems if a safety switch is installed.
Checking the Blower Motor
Another photo provides a close look at the blower motor inside the HVAC system.
The blower motor turns the blower wheel and pushes air across the evaporator coil before sending that cooled air into the ductwork. In simple terms, the evaporator coil makes the air cold, while the blower moves that cold air throughout the home.
If the blower motor becomes weak, overheats, stops running, or cannot reach the proper speed, the central Air Conditioner may have poor airflow even when the refrigeration side of the system is working.
Reduced airflow can also cause the evaporator coil to become too cold. In some situations, that can contribute to coil icing and reduced Cooling performance.
Inspecting the Blower Wheel
The round wheel visible through the air handler opening is the blower wheel. This component spins rapidly and moves a large amount of air through the HVAC system.
Dust and dirt can slowly build up on the blades of a blower wheel. When that happens, the wheel may not move air as efficiently. A dirty blower can also place additional strain on the motor.
During an Air Conditioning inspection, checking this area helps the technician determine whether airflow problems may be coming from dirt buildup, a motor problem, or another restriction in the system.
Looking at the Evaporator Coil
The close-up photos also show the indoor evaporator coil. This is one of the most important parts of a central AC system.
The evaporator coil contains cold refrigerant while the Air Conditioner is running. Indoor air passes across the metal fins, heat transfers from the air into the refrigerant, and the cooled air is then sent back into the home.
The thin metal fins need enough airflow around them. Heavy dirt, dust, pet hair, or other debris can act like a blanket over the coil and make heat transfer more difficult.
Technicians also look for signs of frost, corrosion, oil residue, damaged fins, and other conditions that may indicate a problem. The photographs allow the coil surfaces and surrounding components to be visually checked instead of diagnosing the system only from the outdoor equipment.
Why Airflow and Refrigerant Testing Need to Be Done Together
One of the most important lessons in Air Conditioning repair is that refrigerant pressure and indoor airflow are connected.
For example, low refrigerant pressure does not automatically mean that refrigerant needs to be added. Poor airflow across the evaporator coil can also affect system pressures. That is why checking the blower, coil, filter area, duct system, and refrigerant circuit together provides a better picture of what the AC is actually doing.
This complete-system approach can help avoid unnecessary parts replacement or adding refrigerant before the real cause of the Cooling problem has been identified.
Regular AC maintenance can also help catch airflow, drainage, coil, and refrigerant-related issues before they become larger problems.
