This Heating and Cooling project involved the installation and startup testing of a new AC Pro rooftop package unit for a home in the Las Vegas Valley. A package unit places many of the main Air Conditioning and heating parts inside one weather-resistant cabinet on the roof. This design saves indoor space while allowing the central AC to send conditioned air through the home’s existing duct system.
Before installing any rooftop Air Conditioner, the equipment, roof connection, airflow path, electrical wiring, drain system, and refrigerant components must be checked. A new system can still perform poorly when it is not placed, connected, or tested correctly. Careful installation helps the equipment cool evenly, operate safely, and avoid wasting electricity.
Inspecting the Internal Coil Compartment
The first two pictures show the inside of the AC Pro unit with its access panel removed. The metal fins and blue tubing form part of the coil assembly. A coil is a group of small tubes and thin metal fins that allows heat to move between the refrigerant and the air.
During Cooling operation, warm indoor air passes across the cold evaporator coil. The coil absorbs heat from the air before the blower sends the cooler air back into the home. The technician checks the fins for shipping damage, makes sure the tubing is supported, and confirms that wires and refrigerant lines are not rubbing against sharp metal edges.
Clear space around the coil is important. Bent fins, loose insulation, or blocked airflow can make a central Air Conditioner run longer than necessary. Longer run times may raise energy use and place extra strain on the compressor and blower motor.
Checking the High- and Low-Pressure Service Ports
The third picture shows the clearly marked high-pressure and low-pressure service connections. These ports allow an HVAC technician to attach testing gauges and examine the refrigerant circuit.

The low-pressure side returns refrigerant toward the compressor, while the high-pressure side carries compressed refrigerant through another part of the cooling cycle. Both readings must be reviewed with outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, and manufacturer information. Pressure alone does not prove that a system has the correct refrigerant charge.
Inspecting the Blower Motor and Wheel
The fourth and sixth pictures show the blower assembly. The blower is the fan that pushes air through the ductwork. It pulls warm air from the home, moves it across the coil, and sends cooled air back through the supply vents.
The round motor is mounted in the center of a curved blower housing. The technician checks that the blower wheel turns freely, the motor is secure, and the wiring is routed away from moving parts. A loose or damaged blower can cause weak airflow, uneven room temperatures, extra noise, or coil freezing.
Proper airflow also helps the Cooling system control indoor humidity. When air moves at the correct rate, moisture in the air can collect on the cold coil and drain out of the system. This makes the home feel more comfortable without forcing the thermostat to be set extremely low.
Examining the Refrigerant Tubing and Coil Surface
The fifth picture provides a closer look at the curved refrigerant tubing and the coil fins. The tubing appears neatly formed and supported inside the cabinet. The technician inspects these areas for signs of damage, oil stains, loose joints, or places where vibration could eventually wear a hole in a tube.
An oil stain can sometimes point to a refrigerant leak because oil travels through the system with the refrigerant. No leak can be confirmed from a picture alone, so suspected areas must be tested with proper leak-detection tools.
Positioning the Rooftop Package Unit
The outdoor pictures show the AC Pro unit positioned on a metal rooftop transition. This transition connects the new cabinet to the home’s supply and return duct openings. The unit must sit level and stable so water drains properly and the cabinet does not shake during operation.
The roof connection is also checked for gaps. Unsealed openings can allow cooled air to escape into the roof area. They may also allow rainwater, dust, or hot outdoor air to enter the duct system. Sealing the transition helps protect the roof and keeps more of the conditioned air inside the home.
Connecting Power, Drainage, and Heating Components
The pictures show the electrical disconnect, conduit, drain piping, and other service connections near the package unit. A disconnect is a safety switch that allows power to be shut off close to the equipment. This gives the technician a safe way to service the system.
The white drain line carries away water produced by the evaporator coil. Its trap and slope must be checked so water does not collect inside the cabinet or spill onto the roof. The heating connections and shutoff components are also inspected before the Heating side of the package unit is operated.
Startup and Refrigerant Testing
In the final picture, a manifold gauge set is connected to the AC Pro system. A manifold gauge set is a tool with hoses and gauges used to read refrigerant pressures and service the Cooling circuit.
During startup, the technician runs the system and checks high- and low-side pressure, electrical readings, blower operation, temperature change, drain flow, and thermostat response. The temperature change is often called the temperature split. It is the difference between the warm air entering the system and the cooler air leaving it.
The readings must match the equipment instructions and current operating conditions. Refrigerant should never be added only because one pressure number appears unusual. Incorrect airflow, dirty filters, blocked coils, sensor problems, and outdoor temperature can all affect the readings.
