At Fast Affordable Air, we recently completed a comprehensive air conditioning repair for a residential client in Las Vegas. This home’s cooling system was an older R-22 central air conditioner, which presented several maintenance challenges. Our HVAC technicians inspected both the electrical and mechanical components of the system to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Capacitor Replacement with Titan Pro 45 MFD
The repair started with the inspection of the outdoor condensing unit. We found a failing run capacitor, a common issue in older HVAC systems. The capacitor is responsible for starting the compressor and the fan motor. If it’s weak or defective, the system can struggle to cool the home or fail to start altogether.
We replaced the old capacitor with a new Titan Pro TRCF45 dual run capacitor, rated at 45 MFD ±5% and 440/370 VAC. Titan Pro capacitors are reliable components that meet the performance demands of modern AC repairs. This upgrade improved the starting torque and extended the lifespan of the fan motor and compressor.
Fan Motor Inspection: Severe Rust and Degradation
Next, we turned our attention to the outdoor fan motor. The top plate of the motor was severely rusted and peeling, indicating long-term exposure to heat and moisture. This level of corrosion can lead to unbalanced fan rotation and potentially cause motor failure. While the motor was still operational, we noted it for near-future replacement to avoid unexpected breakdowns during peak summer temperatures.
Indoor System Check: Attic Furnace and Duct Sealing
We moved indoors to inspect the attic air handler. The system includes a gas furnace with sheet metal ductwork. Our technicians verified that the air handler was functioning correctly. However, we discovered several areas where conditioned air was leaking from the ducts. To fix this, we applied a full layer of mastic sealant around the plenum joints and duct collars.
Mastic is a thick paste used to seal HVAC ducts. It’s long-lasting and helps stop air leaks, improving overall system efficiency. By sealing the ducts, we helped the homeowner avoid energy waste and improve indoor comfort without upgrading the equipment.
R-22 Refrigerant Pressure Check
Finally, we connected our Yellow Jacket digital manifold gauges to check the refrigerant levels. The readings showed a low-side pressure of 48.7 psi and a high-side pressure of 153.5 psi, with temperatures of 23.7°F and 84.3°F respectively. These values are within an acceptable range for R-22 systems, confirming that the system was sufficiently charged.
Because R-22 refrigerant is no longer manufactured due to environmental regulations, maintaining proper pressure and avoiding leaks is more important than ever. Our diagnostics confirmed that the system is sealed and performing well, eliminating the need for a costly recharge.
Worn Refrigerant Line Insulation
We also noted deteriorated insulation on the suction line (the larger copper line returning to the compressor). This insulation helps prevent condensation and keeps the refrigerant cool. Replacing the foam wrap will further improve efficiency and protect the system from premature wear.
