Today our Fast Affordable Air technician visited a home in Clark County to check a Trane outdoor heat pump that was not cooling well. The unit is a Trane model 4TWB3048B1000BA and it uses R-410A refrigerant. This system works as both an Air Conditioner and a heater because it is a heat pump. When a heat pump is in Cooling mode, it removes heat from inside the house and sends it outside.
When we arrived, the homeowner explained that the AC was running but the air coming from the vents did not feel as cold as it should. This is a common problem in Las Vegas because the summer heat puts a lot of stress on every central Air Conditioning system. Even small issues can make a big difference in Cooling performance.
Checking the Outdoor AC Unit
The first step was inspecting the outside heat pump. The condenser sits next to the home beneath an orange tree. Trees and plants can sometimes block airflow if leaves fall into the fan or coil. Airflow is very important because the outdoor unit needs to release heat. If it cannot push hot air away, the AC cannot keep the home cool.
We checked the fan blades, the top grille, and the condenser coil. Everything looked clean and there were no signs of damage. The unit was still in good condition for its age, which is impressive for a 2013 system in the Las Vegas desert climate.
Connecting the Refrigerant Gauges
Next, we connected a JB refrigerant manifold gauge set to the service valves. These valves give us the low-side and high-side pressures of the AC. The low-side pressure is like the “breathing in” of the system, and the high-side pressure is like the “breathing out.” Both numbers must be in the correct ranges or the Air Conditioner cannot work properly.
The manifold set has two dials. The blue dial is the low-pressure gauge and the red dial is the high-pressure gauge. These gauges help us see if the refrigerant amount (also called the charge) is correct. Refrigerant is a special chemical that absorbs heat from inside the home. If the system does not have enough of it, the AC struggles to cool.
What the Readings Told Us
With the system running in Cooling mode, our gauge readings showed low-side pressure below 100 psi and a high-side reading in the 225 to 250 psi range. For an R-410A heat pump running in normal summer conditions, the low side often sits closer to 115 to 135 psi. Lower pressure usually means the system may be undercharged or has a refrigerant leak. Another possibility is restricted airflow from the indoor coil or filter.
We also checked the suction line insulation and noticed that the outer covering was worn in a few spots. Insulation helps keep the refrigerant cold as it travels back to the compressor. If the insulation is damaged, some Cooling energy is lost before the refrigerant even enters the outdoor unit.
Explaining the Results to the Homeowner
We explained the gauge readings and what they mean. The Air Conditioner is still operating, but it is not performing at peak efficiency. Low refrigerant levels can make the system run longer, use more energy, and cool the home less effectively. A low-charge heat pump must work harder, which can shorten the life of the compressor.
We recommended checking the indoor coil, replacing the air filter if needed, and performing a full leak test to find out why the refrigerant pressure is low. Refrigerant does not get “used up,” so if levels drop, there is usually a leak somewhere in the system. Finding and fixing leaks keeps the home cooler and prevents future problems.
