Testing the Electrical Operation
The first picture shows a Fieldpiece SC440 digital clamp meter. A clamp meter is a tool that allows an HVAC technician to test electrical power and current safely. Electrical current is also called amperage. It tells us how hard an electrical part is working.
The Fieldpiece meter can be used to test voltage, amperage, resistance, and other electrical readings. Voltage is the electrical pressure supplied to the equipment. Resistance tells us how difficult it is for electricity to move through a wire or part.
These readings are compared with the information printed on the Air Conditioner. If a blower motor or another electrical part is drawing too much power, it may be working harder than normal. If the reading is too low, the part may not be receiving the power it needs.

Checking the Refrigerant Pressure
The second picture shows a manifold pressure gauge connected to the central AC system. Refrigerant is the special fluid that carries heat out of the building. Many people call it Freon, although Freon is actually a brand name that has been used for certain refrigerants.
The gauge helps the technician see what is happening inside the refrigerant lines. However, one pressure reading by itself does not always prove that an Air Conditioning system is low on refrigerant. The technician must also consider the refrigerant type, indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, airflow, and condition of the coils.
A pressure that looks unusual can sometimes be caused by restricted airflow instead of a leak. That is why the electrical test, pressure test, and coil inspection must be reviewed together.
Inspecting the Indoor Evaporator Coil
The remaining pictures show the indoor evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is the cold section of the HVAC system. Warm indoor air passes across its thin metal fins, allowing heat to move from the air into the refrigerant.
The photographs show dust and light debris across parts of the coil surface. The thin rows of metal are called fins. They provide a large surface where heat can be removed from the air. These fins must remain open so air can pass between them.
When dust builds up on the coil, it can act like a small blanket. Air has a harder time moving through the fins, and heat cannot transfer as easily. The central Air Conditioner may then run longer while producing less Cooling.
The technician examined the lower section, center section, and upper edge of the coil. Looking at several areas is important because dirt does not always collect evenly. One section may look fairly open while another section is more restricted.
The metal fins were also checked for bent or crushed areas. A few small marks are common, but a large area of flattened fins can reduce airflow. A fin comb is a small HVAC tool that can straighten damaged fins when the condition allows it.
Why Airflow and Pressure Must Be Checked Together
A central Air Conditioning system needs the right amount of airflow to operate correctly. When airflow is restricted, the evaporator coil can become too cold. This may cause moisture on the coil to freeze and form ice.
Restricted airflow can also change the refrigerant-pressure readings. Without checking the coil and airflow, someone could mistakenly believe that the system only needs more refrigerant. Adding refrigerant without confirming the cause can create a different problem.
This is why a complete diagnosis is more useful than replacing one part or adding refrigerant immediately. The technician first gathers electrical readings, checks the pressure, and looks closely at the coil before deciding what service is needed.
