Air Conditioning Repair and Attic Ductwork Inspection in Las Vegas

A good Air Conditioning repair does not always begin with replacing a part. Sometimes the first and most important step is looking at the entire Heating and Cooling system to find out where comfort and efficiency are being lost.

During this residential HVAC project, Fast Affordable Air inspected the outdoor Cooling equipment, the indoor Bryant furnace and air-handling area, and the ductwork running through the attic. The photos show several areas that can affect how well a central AC moves cool air through a home.

Starting With the Outdoor Air Conditioning Equipment

The first photos show our service vehicle arriving at the home and the outdoor condensing units located along the side of the house. A condenser is the outdoor part of an Air Conditioner. Its job is to release heat that the AC has removed from inside the home.

Several outdoor units were installed in a narrow space between the home and the block wall. This makes a careful inspection especially important. An HVAC technician checks that the fan can move air, the coil is not badly blocked, the refrigerant lines are protected, and the equipment has enough room to release heat.

Leaves, pine needles, dirt, and other debris can be seen around portions of the outdoor equipment. Keeping the area around a condenser reasonably clear helps air move through the coil. Restricted airflow can make a central Air Conditioner work harder to remove heat.

Inspecting the Bryant Furnace and Indoor Equipment

Inside the home, the photos show a Bryant furnace connected to the home’s duct system. A furnace is mainly used for heating, but in many split HVAC systems it also contains or supports the blower that moves air during the Cooling season.

The blower is basically a large fan inside the Heating and Cooling system. When the thermostat asks for Cooling, the blower pushes conditioned air into the ducts and toward the rooms of the house.

During an Air Conditioning diagnosis, this area should be checked for proper airflow, secure electrical connections, correct blower operation, filter condition, and signs of air leakage around the duct connections. A problem here can affect the entire Central Air Conditioning system even when the outdoor AC unit is still operating.

Checking the Outdoor Unit Marked for Puron Refrigerant

One of the outdoor condensers has a visible Puron label. Puron is a trade name commonly associated with R-410A refrigerant. Refrigerant is the fluid that carries heat between the indoor and outdoor sections of an Air Conditioner.

The condition of the outdoor coil, fan, wiring, refrigerant tubing, and electrical components should all be reviewed during diagnosis. Refrigerant pressures and temperatures can also be tested when needed, but those measurements are not shown in these project photos.

This type of full-system inspection helps prevent guessing. A Cooling problem can come from the outdoor condenser, indoor airflow, duct leakage, controls, or a combination of several smaller issues.

Inspecting the Attic Ductwork

The attic photos reveal one of the most important parts of this project. Large sections of flexible ductwork run between the framing and insulation.

Flex duct is a flexible tube used to carry heated or cooled air from the HVAC system to different rooms. It normally has an inner air passage surrounded by insulation and a protective outer jacket.

Some sections shown in the photos have worn, loose, or damaged outer material. One area has fiberglass insulation exposed where the protective covering has opened. When duct insulation is damaged, attic heat can warm the cool air traveling through the duct before that air reaches the room.

This is especially important in a hot attic. The central AC may be making properly cooled air, but damaged or poorly insulated ducts can cause some of that Cooling energy to be lost along the way.

Inspecting the 8-Inch Flexible Duct

The final photos provide a close look at a section marked as an 8-inch duct. The number refers to the approximate diameter of the duct.

The technician checks these sections for crushed areas, sharp bends, loose connections, damaged insulation, and poor support. A badly squeezed or bent duct acts a little like a garden hose that has been pinched. Air may still move through it, but not as easily.

Repairing damaged duct insulation normally involves inspecting the inner duct first, securing any loose connections, restoring the insulation around the duct, and sealing the outer protective jacket. If the inner duct itself is badly damaged, replacement of that section may be the better repair.

Why Duct Condition Affects AC Performance

A central Cooling system depends on both the equipment and the ductwork. Even a properly operating condenser and furnace blower cannot deliver comfortable temperatures if cooled air is leaking into the attic or gaining heat through damaged insulation.

Properly supported and insulated ducts can help provide several benefits.

Looking at the Complete Heating and Cooling System

This project shows why an HVAC diagnosis should include more than the outdoor Air Conditioner. The condenser, Bryant furnace, blower system, refrigerant lines, and attic ductwork all work together.

Finding damaged duct insulation or restricted airflow early can also help keep a smaller problem from placing additional stress on the Central Cooling equipment. Regular inspection of these components is part of good AC maintenance.

For homeowners with multiple Cooling systems, inspecting each outdoor unit and tracing the connected ductwork can also help identify which system serves each part of the house and where airflow or insulation problems may be occurring.
