Testing the Dual-Run Capacitor
The electrical inspection included the outdoor unit’s capacitor. A capacitor is a small electrical part that stores and releases energy. It helps the fan motor and compressor start and continue running.
The removed GE capacitor was rated at 35/5 microfarads and 440 volts AC. A microfarad, shown as µF, is the measurement used for the capacitor’s storage ability. The 35 side supports one motor circuit, while the 5 side supports the other. This is why it is called a dual-run capacitor. It performs two jobs inside one metal container.
A weak capacitor may cause the outdoor fan to start slowly, stop unexpectedly, make a humming sound, or fail to start. The compressor may also have trouble starting. When the compressor does not run correctly, the indoor blower may continue moving air, but the air will not become cold enough.

Checking the Vent Temperature
The final photos show an infrared thermometer aimed at an indoor supply vent. A supply vent is where cooled air enters a room. One photo shows about 69°F, while the later photo shows about 64.5°F. The lower surface reading suggests that cooler air was reaching the vent after the system operated.
An infrared thermometer measures the surface of the vent rather than the exact temperature of the moving air. For a complete cooling test, a technician normally measures both the return air and the supply air with an air-temperature probe. The difference between those readings is called the temperature split.
