A central Air Conditioner can stop cooling because of a part that is small enough to hold in one hand. During this Las Vegas-area air conditioning repair, the outdoor unit was inspected after the cooling system showed signs of an electrical problem.
The technician found an older dual-run capacitor inside the outdoor condenser. A capacitor is an electrical helper that gives the compressor and condenser fan motor the power they need to start and continue running. The compressor moves refrigerant through the system, while the outdoor fan helps release heat outside.
This repair included testing the old capacitor, installing a matching replacement, restarting the central AC, and checking the refrigerant pressures with manifold gauges.
Inspecting the Outdoor Air Conditioner
The first picture shows the original capacitor secured inside the outdoor cooling unit with a metal mounting strap. Its label shows a rating of 35+5 microfarads.
A microfarad, shown as MFD or µF, is the measurement used to show how much electrical energy a capacitor can hold. The 35 side supports the compressor, while the 5 side supports the condenser fan motor. This is why it is called a dual-run capacitor. One part helps operate two different motors.
The capacitor also showed signs of age and outdoor exposure. The top edge had visible rust and surface wear. Rust alone does not always mean a capacitor has failed, but it is a good reason to perform a complete electrical test.
Testing the Capacitor With a Fieldpiece Meter
The technician used a Fieldpiece SC440 meter to test the electrical component. A professional meter helps the technician compare the capacitor’s actual output with the rating printed on its label.
The meter display in the picture showed a very low reading during the electrical check. When a capacitor tests far below its correct rating, it may no longer give the compressor or fan motor the electrical push they need.
A weak or failed capacitor may cause several problems:
- The outdoor fan may not start.
- The compressor may make a humming sound.
- The Air Conditioner may blow warm air.
- The system may start and stop repeatedly.
- The compressor may overheat from trying to start without enough help.
Before testing or replacing this part, power to the outdoor HVAC unit must be turned off. Capacitors can still hold an electrical charge even after the main power has been disconnected. The component must be safely discharged and handled by someone trained in electrical Air Conditioning repair.
Installing the New 35+5 MFD Capacitor
The old capacitor was removed and replaced with a new 35+5 MFD capacitor rated for 440 VAC. VAC means volts of alternating current. The replacement’s microfarad rating must match the equipment requirements. A higher approved voltage rating may be used, but the MFD rating should not be changed unless the equipment manufacturer allows it.
The new capacitor also lists a tolerance of plus or minus 5 percent. Tolerance is the small amount a capacitor reading may differ from its printed rating while still being considered usable.
The wiring was returned to the correct terminals. Dual-run capacitors normally have three terminal groups:
- C for common
- FAN for the condenser fan motor
- HERM for the sealed compressor
Placing a wire on the wrong terminal can damage the component or keep the central Air Conditioning system from running. The connections must be tight, clean, and arranged so they cannot rub against the cabinet or moving fan parts.
Checking Refrigerant Pressures After the Repair
After the new capacitor was installed, the system was restarted. The final pictures show an analog manifold gauge set connected to the outdoor unit.
A manifold gauge set allows an HVAC technician to read the pressure on both sides of the refrigeration system. The blue gauge is normally connected to the low-pressure side. The red gauge is normally connected to the high-pressure side.
Refrigerant is the fluid that absorbs heat from inside the home and carries it outdoors. Pressure readings help show how the compressor and refrigerant circuit are operating after the electrical repair.
A pressure number should not be judged by itself. The technician must also consider the refrigerant type, outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, superheat, subcooling, and the equipment manufacturer’s specifications. Superheat and subcooling are temperature measurements used to help determine whether refrigerant is moving through the system correctly.
Connecting gauges does not automatically mean refrigerant needs to be added. Adding refrigerant without proper testing can create new cooling problems and increase pressure inside the system.

In this project, the worn capacitor was replaced with a matching 35+5 MFD, 440 VAC component. The technician then used the Fieldpiece meter and manifold gauges to verify the electrical repair and review the system’s operating pressures.
