Air Conditioning Repair With Burned Wiring and Failed Capacitor Replacement

A small electrical part can cause a big cooling problem. During this air conditioning repair project, the outdoor unit had old capacitors, a badly burned electrical connection, and signs that the compressor and condenser fan were not receiving the help they needed to run correctly.

What Is an AC Capacitor?

A capacitor is a small electrical storage device. It holds and releases electricity to help a motor start and continue running.

Think of it like a person giving a bicycle an extra push. The compressor and outdoor fan motor need that electrical push when the Air Conditioning system starts. When a capacitor becomes weak or fails, the motor may hum, start slowly, overheat, or not start at all.

The old system used two separate MARS capacitors. One was rated at 45 microfarads for the compressor. The other was rated at 5 microfarads for the condenser fan motor.

A microfarad, shown as µF or MFD, tells us how much electricity a capacitor can store. The correct number is important. A motor designed for a 45 µF capacitor should not be connected to a capacitor with the wrong rating.

Inspecting the Old Electrical Parts

Before touching the electrical components, the technician shut off power and used a Fieldpiece SC440 meter to check the system. A meter is a testing tool that can measure voltage, electrical current, resistance, and capacitor strength.

The inspection revealed a serious problem near the old capacitor. One terminal and its wire connection showed heavy heat damage. The wire insulation was dark and burned, and green corrosion was visible near the connection.

Corrosion is the rough green or white material that forms when metal reacts with moisture and air. It can make it harder for electricity to pass through a connection. This extra resistance creates heat. More heat can damage the wire, terminal, capacitor, or nearby parts.

The original MARS capacitors were dated in 2016. Capacitors wear down over time because they are exposed to heat, vibration, and repeated starting cycles. The desert heat can make this wear happen faster.

Testing the 5 µF Fan Capacitor

The smaller MARS capacitor was rated at 5.0 µF. Its job was to support the outdoor condenser fan motor.

The technician disconnected and safely discharged the capacitor before testing it. Discharging means removing any electricity that may still be stored inside the part.

The meter showed a reading at or near zero during testing. That is far below the 5.0 µF rating printed on the label. A failed fan capacitor can keep the outdoor fan from starting. Without that fan, heat cannot leave the refrigerant properly, and the central Air Conditioner may overheat or shut off.

Testing the 45 µF Compressor Capacitor

The larger MARS capacitor was rated at 45.0 µF. This capacitor supported the compressor, which is the main pumping part of the Air Conditioning system.

The compressor moves refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor sections. Refrigerant is the special material that carries heat out of the home.

Meter testing also showed that the compressor capacitor was no longer providing the expected electrical storage. The heat-damaged terminal made the situation more serious. A compressor that tries to run with a failed capacitor may pull extra electricity, overheat, trip the breaker, or stop working.

Installing the New MMI Dual-Run Capacitor

Instead of installing two separate capacitors again, the technician installed one MMI 45+5 µF dual-run capacitor rated for 440 volts.

A dual-run capacitor combines two capacitors inside one metal can. The 45 µF side supports the compressor, while the 5 µF side supports the condenser fan motor.

The new capacitor has three terminal groups.

  • C means common and connects to the shared electrical circuit.
  • FAN connects to the condenser fan motor.
  • HERM connects to the compressor. HERM is short for hermetic compressor.

The burned connection was addressed before the new part was installed. Secure insulated terminals were placed on the capacitor connections, and the wiring was arranged so each wire connected to the correct terminal.

The new capacitor was secured inside the electrical cabinet with its mounting strap. A capacitor should not be left loose because vibration can damage the wires or allow the metal casing to contact another electrical part.

Checking the Central Cooling System After the Repair

After the electrical work was completed, power could be restored and the Heating and Cooling system checked during operation. The technician would verify that the compressor and condenser fan started normally, the fan blade turned at the proper speed, and the wires remained secure.

The electrical readings should also be compared with the equipment information. This helps confirm that the motors are not pulling too much electricity after the repair.

A capacitor replacement does not change the rated efficiency of an HVAC unit. However, it can help the existing motors start and run as designed. That may prevent long starting attempts, overheating, repeated breaker trips, and wasted run time.
