Air Conditioning Repair With Evaporator Coil Cleaning and Refrigerant Testing

What Is an Evaporator Coil?

The evaporator coil is the cold part of a central AC system. It is normally located inside the air handler or furnace cabinet. Warm air from the home passes across the coil. Refrigerant inside the copper tubing absorbs heat from that air, allowing the system to send cooler air back into the rooms.

The coil contains many thin metal fins. A fin is a narrow piece of metal that helps move heat from the air into the refrigerant. These fins are packed closely together. Because the gaps are so small, dust, pet hair, smoke residue, and other debris can block airflow.

Inspecting the A-Shaped Coil

The first pictures show an A-shaped evaporator coil. It is called an A-coil because the two angled sections look like the letter A when viewed from the end.

The technician opened the indoor HVAC cabinet so both sides of the coil could be examined. Looking at only one side is not always enough. Dirt can collect on the surface that faces the incoming air, while the other side may still look fairly clean.

Several areas in the photos appear dark brown or gray. This discoloration is consistent with dirt and buildup trapped between the fins. Some sections are more affected than others, which can cause uneven airflow through the central Air Conditioning system.

Checking the Coil Fins and Copper Tubing

The close-up pictures show the condition of the thin aluminum fins. The technician checked for packed dirt, bent areas, oily spots, corrosion, and physical damage.

An oily area can sometimes be a warning sign of a refrigerant leak because refrigerant oil travels through the tubing with the refrigerant. However, dirt or staining alone does not prove that a leak is present. Further testing is needed before making that diagnosis.

The curved copper sections visible around the outside of the coil are called return bends. They connect the straight refrigerant tubes inside the coil. These bends were visually checked for damage, rubbing, corrosion, and signs of leakage.

Cleaning the Evaporator Coil

The dirty sections were treated using professional evaporator coil-cleaning methods. Coil cleaner is a product made to loosen dust, grime, and sticky buildup without damaging the metal when it is used correctly.

The debris must be removed carefully. High-pressure water or rough brushing can bend the soft fins. Bent fins reduce the open space available for air to pass through. The technician also needs to protect nearby electrical parts and control where the dirty cleaning liquid drains.

Cleaning the coil opens the small air passages between the fins. This allows the blower to move air through the Cooling system with less resistance.

Why a Dirty Coil Causes Cooling Problems

A dirty evaporator coil works like a blanket placed over a cold surface. The blanket slows down heat movement. In the same way, dirt keeps warm household air from making good contact with the cold coil.

This may cause several problems.

  • Rooms that do not cool evenly
  • Higher electrical use
  • Extra strain on the blower motor and compressor
  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil
  • Water leaking after the ice melts

A frozen coil does not always mean the system is low on refrigerant. Restricted airflow from a dirty coil or clogged filter can also cause freezing. That is why a complete diagnosis is better than adding refrigerant without checking the rest of the system.

Testing Refrigerant Pressures

Another photo shows a two-gauge manifold connected to the outdoor unit. A manifold gauge set is a tool that allows an HVAC technician to measure refrigerant pressure and study how the system is operating.

The blue gauge is normally connected to the low-pressure side. The red gauge is normally connected to the high-pressure side. These readings can help identify problems with refrigerant flow, airflow, the compressor, or the metering device.

The metering device is the small part that controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator coil. It works somewhat like a nozzle that controls the flow of water.

A pressure reading by itself does not tell the whole story. Outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, refrigerant type, superheat, and subcooling may also need to be checked. Superheat and subcooling are temperature measurements technicians use to judge whether refrigerant is moving and changing state correctly.

The uploaded gauge photo does not provide enough detail to confirm the exact pressures or whether refrigerant was added. It does show that refrigerant testing was included as part of the system inspection.

Testing the Cooling System After Service

After the coil area was cleaned and inspected, the HVAC system could be operated and tested. The technician would check that air was moving freely through the coil, that the blower sounded normal, and that the Air Conditioning system was removing heat from the home.

A temperature split may also be measured. This is the difference between the warm air entering the return vent and the cooler air leaving the supply vent. The result must be compared with indoor conditions and the equipment design rather than judged by one fixed number.
