Air Conditioning Repair With Evaporator Coil Cleaning, Capacitor Inspection, and Refrigerant Testing

Fast Affordable Air recently completed an Air Conditioning repair and maintenance project for a central cooling system in the Las Vegas Valley. The indoor coil had collected a layer of dust, the electrical capacitor needed to be inspected, and the refrigerant system needed a pressure check.

These parts work together. The coil removes heat from the indoor air. The capacitor helps important motors start and run. The refrigerant carries heat from inside the building to the outdoor unit. A problem with any one of these areas can leave an Air Conditioner running longer while providing less cooling.

Inspecting the Indoor Evaporator Coil

The first three pictures show the indoor evaporator coil before the service was completed. An evaporator coil is the cold metal part inside the Air Conditioning system. Warm household air passes across its thin metal fins, and the refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from that air.

The fins are the many thin metal strips visible in the photographs. They provide a large surface where heat can move from the air into the coil. Because the spaces between the fins are very small, dust can collect quickly when it gets past the air filter.

The coil in these pictures had a gray layer of buildup across much of its surface. Some areas were darker than others. This is common when dust has slowly collected over time. Even a thin layer can act like a blanket and make it harder for heat to enter the coil.

Restricted airflow can also cause the central AC to run longer. The home may have warm rooms, weak airflow from the vents, or higher power use. In severe cases, the coil can become too cold and begin to freeze.

Cleaning the Coil Without Damaging the Fins

Before cleaning, power to the Heating and Cooling equipment should be turned off. The surrounding panels, insulation, drain area, and electrical parts must also be protected.

The technician then loosens the dirt and carefully cleans the coil surface. Strong pressure should not be aimed directly at the fins. These fins bend easily. Bent fins can block airflow even when the coil is clean.

Cleaning must reach more than the visible front surface. Dust can become packed deeper between the rows of metal. The technician works carefully so the dirt is removed without pushing it farther into the coil.

The drain area is also checked because moisture normally forms on a cold evaporator coil. That moisture should fall into the drain pan and leave through the drain line. Loose dirt washed from the coil should not be allowed to clog that path.

Inspecting the C.S.C. Dual-Run Capacitor

The fourth picture shows a C.S.C. dual-run capacitor installed near the coil section. A capacitor is a small electrical part that stores a quick burst of electrical energy. It helps a motor start and continue running smoothly.

The label shows a rating of 40+5 microfarads with a tolerance of plus or minus 6 percent. A microfarad, shown as µF, is the unit used to measure how much electrical charge a capacitor can store.

The two numbers mean the capacitor serves two circuits. The 40 µF section normally supports the compressor, while the 5 µF section supports a fan motor. The label also shows a voltage rating of 370/440 VAC.

A technician tests the capacitor and compares the measured result with the rating printed on its label. A capacitor may still look normal while testing below its proper range. When that happens, a motor may struggle to start, overheat, make a humming sound, or stop running.

Checking Refrigerant Pressures With Manifold Gauges

The fifth picture shows a set of manifold gauges used during the Cooling system inspection. Manifold gauges allow an HVAC technician to read the pressure on the low side and high side of the refrigerant system.

The blue gauge is normally connected to the low-pressure side. The red gauge is normally connected to the high-pressure side. These readings help the technician understand what is happening inside the sealed refrigerant circuit.

A pressure reading should not be judged by itself. The technician must also consider the outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, refrigerant type, airflow, equipment design, and how long the central Air Conditioner has been running.

This is important after coil cleaning. Poor airflow can change refrigerant readings and make a properly charged system appear to have another problem. Restoring airflow first gives the technician a better picture of the system’s true operation.

Examining the Coil After Cleaning

The final picture shows the coil after cleaning. The metal fins appear brighter, and the narrow spaces between them are easier to see. This gives the blower a clearer path for moving indoor air through the coil.

Better airflow allows more warm air to touch the cold metal surface. This helps the central Air Conditioning system remove heat more effectively. It can also help the system reach the thermostat setting without running as long.

A clean coil cannot correct every HVAC problem, but it removes one major source of airflow restriction. Combined with capacitor testing and refrigerant pressure checks, the service gives the technician a more complete view of the system.

The completed work provided a cleaner heat-transfer surface, less resistance against the blower, more even airflow, and a better chance of dependable cooling during hot Clark County weather.
