Ameristar AC Repair and Attic HVAC Inspection in the Las Vegas Valley

A central Air Conditioning system is more than the outdoor unit sitting beside the house. The indoor equipment, ductwork, refrigerant lines, electrical controls, drainage, and airflow all have to work together. On this HVAC project, the Fast Affordable Air team inspected an Ameristar indoor unit installed in the attic along with the connected duct system and outdoor Air Conditioner equipment.

The photos show why a complete inspection matters. A Cooling problem may seem like it is coming from the outside AC, but poor airflow, loose duct connections, drainage problems, or an issue at the indoor unit can also make a home uncomfortable.

Inspecting the Ameristar Indoor HVAC Equipment

The first photos show the Ameristar equipment mounted horizontally in the attic. Horizontal installation is common when the Heating and Cooling equipment must fit into a low attic space.

A yellow flexible gas connector can also be seen entering the indoor equipment. This indicates that the indoor section includes gas-fired heating equipment. During an HVAC inspection, the technician checks the condition of connections around the furnace and makes sure nearby components are properly positioned.

The indoor section is important during the Cooling season too. The blower inside this part of the system pushes air across the cooling coil and then sends that conditioned air through the home’s ductwork.

A blower is simply the fan assembly that moves air through the Central Air Conditioning system. If airflow becomes too weak, even an outdoor AC that is running normally may have trouble keeping the home comfortable.

Checking the Attic Installation and Equipment Support

The next photos give a wider look at the installation. The Ameristar equipment is supported above the attic floor, giving technicians room to inspect connections and service the system.

Attic Heating and Cooling equipment needs to stay properly supported and reasonably accessible. The technician can inspect wiring, refrigerant tubing, drain piping, duct connections, and other parts of the installation without disturbing the surrounding structure.

The gray piping visible near the equipment is part of the drainage area that should also be checked during service. When an Air Conditioner runs, moisture can form on the cold indoor coil. That water must have a safe path away from the equipment.

This is one reason regular AC maintenance includes more than simply looking at the outside unit.

Inspecting the Supply Plenum and Duct Connections

The close-up attic pictures show the sheet-metal duct section and several large insulated flexible ducts connected to it.

This sheet-metal box is commonly called a plenum. A plenum is a chamber that collects or distributes air before it travels through the ducts. Think of it like a traffic intersection for the air moving through the house.

The duct connections are important because cooled air needs a clear and sealed path from the Central Cooling equipment to each room. A loose or damaged connection can allow conditioned air to escape into the attic instead of reaching the living space.

The technician can inspect these connections for gaps, damaged insulation, crushed duct sections, or other conditions that may restrict airflow. Flexible duct should also be routed so that air can move through it without severe bends or collapsed areas.

Good airflow can help the Air Conditioner cool rooms more evenly. It can also reduce unnecessary strain on the blower because the system does not have to fight against as much airflow resistance.

Looking at the Refrigerant and Vent Connections

Another photo shows the metal vent pipe above the indoor equipment along with copper tubing near the duct and coil area.

The copper tubes are part of the refrigerant line set. A line set is the pair of copper pipes that carries refrigerant between the indoor coil and the outdoor condenser. Refrigerant absorbs heat inside the house and carries that heat outdoors.

The metal venting associated with gas heating equipment is also an important safety inspection point. Even though the furnace may not be needed during a Las Vegas summer, the Heating and Cooling system should be inspected as a complete system rather than treating each part as unrelated equipment.

Inspecting the Outdoor Central AC Units

The last two pictures show the outdoor condensing equipment beside the home. This property has two outdoor units, which often means different areas or zones of the house are served by separate systems.

The outdoor unit is where heat collected from inside the house is released. The large fan on top pulls outdoor air through the condenser coil and helps move that heat away from the refrigerant.

During an Air Conditioning repair or inspection, a technician can check the condenser coil, fan operation, electrical components, refrigerant performance, and the general condition of the cabinet.

The area around the condenser also matters. Leaves, dirt, weeds, and other debris can collect around outdoor equipment. Keeping reasonable clearance around the unit helps it move air through the condenser coil.
