Attic Air Conditioning Inspection and Cooling Performance Test in Las Vegas

A central air conditioner has several parts working together. Some equipment is outside, while other parts may be hidden in the attic. During this air conditioning project, the Fast Affordable Air technician inspected both areas and checked how well the system was moving cool air through the home.

The visit included an attic equipment inspection, a look at the duct connections, an outdoor condenser check, and temperature testing at the return and supply vents. These steps help show whether the HVAC system is producing cooling and delivering it into the rooms.

Inspecting the Attic HVAC Equipment

The first picture shows the indoor heating and cooling equipment installed horizontally in the attic. A horizontal installation means the unit lies on its side instead of standing upright. This setup is common when there is limited space inside the home.

The technician checked the equipment cabinet, nearby wiring, metal connections, vent pipe, insulation, and flexible ducts. Flexible ducts are the large silver tubes that carry air between the HVAC equipment and the rooms.

An attic inspection is important because loose duct connections can let cooled air escape before it reaches the living space. Damaged insulation can also allow attic heat to warm the air traveling through the ducts. That can make the central AC run longer and use more electricity.

The equipment was also checked for visible signs of moisture, loose wiring, damaged panels, and blocked airflow. These basic checks can help find a small problem before it becomes a larger air conditioning repair.

Checking the Return-Air Temperature

The second picture shows a temperature reading of about 85.4°F at the large return grille. The return grille is where the HVAC system pulls warm indoor air back toward the equipment.

Think of the return vent as the system’s breathing-in point. Warm air enters the return, passes through the filter, moves across the indoor cooling coil, and is then sent back into the house as cooler air.

A high return-area temperature can happen when the house is warm, the system has been off, or the AC is trying to recover after a hot part of the day. Las Vegas attics and homes can gain heat quickly during warm weather, so the return reading gives the technician a starting point for the cooling test.

Measuring the Cooled Supply Air

The third picture shows a reading of about 59.1°F at a smaller supply vent. A supply vent is where cooled air comes back into the room.

The difference between the return reading and supply reading is often called the temperature split. In simple terms, it shows how much the system appears to cool the air as it travels through the air conditioner.

In these photos, the difference between 85.4°F and 59.1°F is about 26.3°F. That is a strong change in temperature. However, the tool shown is an infrared thermometer, which reads the surface of the vent instead of measuring the moving air directly. For a more exact temperature split, an HVAC technician may place temperature probes inside the return and supply air streams.

A large temperature difference can show that the air is being cooled well, but it should still be reviewed along with airflow. If airflow is too low because of a dirty filter, blocked vent, blower problem, or restricted coil, the supply vent may feel very cold even though the home is not receiving enough air.

Inspecting the Outdoor Condenser

The fourth picture shows the outdoor condenser beside the home. The condenser is the part of the central air conditioning system that releases heat outdoors. It contains the compressor, condenser coil, fan motor, electrical controls, and other important parts.

During an outdoor inspection, a technician may check whether the fan runs smoothly, whether air can move through the coil, and whether weeds, dirt, or debris are blocking the unit. The technician may also listen for unusual sounds and inspect the electrical disconnect and refrigerant lines.

The area around this condenser has dry grass and yard debris. Keeping plants and loose material away from the cabinet helps the outdoor fan move air more freely. Good airflow helps the air conditioner release heat without working harder than necessary.

How These Checks Improve Indoor Comfort

Testing both the indoor and outdoor sections gives a more complete picture of the HVAC system. A cold supply reading by itself does not prove that every room is receiving enough cooling. The technician must also consider the ducts, filter, blower, vents, outdoor equipment, and the amount of air moving through the system.

Proper airflow can help rooms cool more evenly. It may also reduce long operating times and lower unnecessary strain on the blower motor and compressor. When the ducts are connected and insulated correctly, more of the cooling reaches the rooms instead of being lost inside the attic.
