Attic Air Conditioning Repair and Ductwork Inspection on a Lennox HVAC System

This residential Heating and Cooling project focused on an attic-mounted Lennox HVAC system. The indoor equipment was surrounded by insulated flexible ducts, sheet-metal air boxes, gas piping, electrical wiring, and attic insulation. Because so many important parts were packed into a small space, the inspection had to be completed carefully and in the correct order.

Beginning With a Full Attic Inspection

The first photo gives a wide view of the attic system. It shows the Lennox furnace, the Cooling coil cabinet, several flexible ducts, sheet-metal connections, and the furnace vent pipe.

Flexible duct is a round air tube covered with insulation and a silver outer jacket. It carries cooled or heated air between the HVAC equipment and the rooms inside the home. These ducts must remain properly supported. A crushed, sharply bent, torn, or disconnected duct can make it harder for air to reach a room.

Before opening any cabinet, an HVAC technician checks the work area for loose boards, exposed wiring, damaged ducts, blocked access, and disturbed insulation. Attics can be tight, dark, and difficult to move through. Careful access protects both the technician and the home.

Checking the Evaporator Coil Cabinet

The second photo shows a closer view of the indoor coil cabinet. The evaporator coil is the part of the central AC that absorbs heat from the indoor air. Refrigerant travels through this coil while the blower pushes air across it.

The insulated refrigerant line entering the cabinet was visually checked for damaged insulation, rubbing, loose support, and gaps around the cabinet opening. Refrigerant-line insulation helps stop unwanted heat from entering the line. It also helps control moisture that may form on the cold pipe.

The technician also checks the coil cabinet for signs of water, rust, air leakage, and damaged drain connections. Water produced during normal Air Conditioning operation must leave through the condensate drain. Condensate is simply the water removed from humid indoor air while the AC is cooling.

Inspecting the Sheet-Metal Plenums

Photos three and four show the metal air boxes connected to the insulated ducts. These boxes are called plenums. A plenum collects air from the HVAC unit and directs it into one or more ducts. Another plenum may bring return air from the home back to the equipment.

The edges, corners, seams, and duct collars were inspected for loose fasteners and possible air leaks. A duct collar is the round metal fitting where a flexible duct attaches to a metal air box.

Weak connections can allow conditioned air to escape into the attic instead of reaching the rooms below. Gaps may also allow dusty attic air to enter a return duct. Accessible connection points can be secured and sealed with approved materials such as HVAC mastic or metal-backed tape.

Mastic is a thick sealing compound made for duct systems. It hardens around seams and small gaps. It should not be confused with ordinary cloth duct tape, which may dry out and separate under attic temperatures. ENERGY STAR provides additional information about duct sealing and insulation.

Reviewing the Lennox Furnace and Gas Connection

The fifth photo clearly shows the Lennox furnace. This furnace is part of the complete central Heating and Cooling system. During summer, its blower moves air across the Cooling coil. During winter, the same cabinet provides heat and sends warm air through the duct system.

The red-handled valve above the unit is the manual gas shutoff. It allows the gas supply to be turned off when the furnace needs service. The technician checks that the valve is accessible and that the nearby gas piping appears properly supported.

The furnace panels and air openings are also reviewed. Loose panels may vibrate or allow air to escape. Blocked openings can interfere with safe furnace operation. Internal gas components should only be opened, tested, or adjusted by a qualified technician.

Checking Electrical Service and Duct Support

Photo six shows the large flexible duct beside the Lennox equipment. The duct was checked for sharp bends, sagging, damaged outer covering, and stress near its connection point. A smooth and supported air path helps the blower move air without unnecessary resistance.

The photo also shows an electrical receptacle and flexible metal conduit near the equipment. The technician visually checks that wiring is protected, cabinet connections are secure, and service access is not blocked. Electrical power must be shut off before panels or electrical parts are handled.

Inspecting the Final Air Box and Venting Area

The seventh photo shows another sheet-metal air box connected to a large insulated duct. Sealant is visible around portions of the metal cabinet. The technician checks these areas for loose material, open seams, and damaged insulation.

A metal vent pipe is also visible nearby. This pipe carries furnace combustion gases out of the home. Its joints, support, clearance, and general condition are important safety items. An Air Conditioner repair visit involving a gas furnace should include a visual review of the venting system, even when the original complaint concerns Cooling.

System Testing After the Attic Work

After accessible connections are secured and the inspection is complete, the furnace panels are installed correctly and the system is restarted. The technician listens for unusual blower sounds and checks that air is moving from the supply vents.

Supply and return temperatures may also be measured. The return is the air entering the system. The supply is the cooled air leaving it. Comparing these temperatures helps show whether the central Air Conditioning system is removing heat as expected.

Regular AC maintenance can help identify loose duct connections, damaged insulation, drainage concerns, and airflow restrictions before they turn into larger problems.
