Our team at Fast Affordable Air recently performed a comprehensive service on a residential Carrier heating and cooling system in Las Vegas. The system included a gas furnace paired with a central air conditioning unit. Several critical components needed attention to restore the system’s performance and safety.
Diagnosing the System
The first step was to carefully inspect both the indoor gas furnace and the outdoor AC condenser. The indoor furnace unit, located in the garage, showed signs of wear on its wiring and ignition components. After removing the panel cover, we examined the control board, draft inducer motor, burner assembly, and gas valve. Everything was checked for continuity, voltage, and operation during a test cycle.
We also examined the flexible gas line, shut-off valve, and hard pipe connections feeding the furnace (visible in the third image). Gas safety is always a priority, so we confirmed tightness and checked for any potential leaks with a bubble test.
Outdoor AC Condenser Inspection
Moving outside, the Carrier condenser unit showed visible signs of dust and heat exposure from the desert climate. Condensers need open airflow to release heat efficiently. We cleaned the condenser coil and checked refrigerant pressures. The electrical disconnect box and whip were also inspected to ensure safe power delivery.
We noted that the refrigerant line insulation needed resealing where it enters the wall. That exposed copper can lead to reduced cooling efficiency if left uninsulated under the sun.
Common Parts Serviced
- Ignitor: Responsible for lighting the burners. A faulty ignitor can cause the furnace not to start.
- Flame sensor: Confirms that the burner flame is present. If dirty or defective, it can shut the system off prematurely.
- Blower motor and control board: The wiring showed signs of aging, and we ensured solid connections to avoid intermittent failures.
- Condenser coil cleaning: Outdoor units collect dust and debris over time, which impacts airflow and efficiency.
