Compressor and Airflow Diagnosis on an Older Packaged Air Conditioner

The photos from this air conditioning project show an older packaged AC unit connected to large metal ducts outside the building. A packaged system keeps the compressor, coils, blower, and other major cooling parts inside one outdoor cabinet.

This type of central Air Conditioner can provide many years of service, but heat, dust, loose wiring, worn insulation, and air leaks can slowly cause problems. During this project, the system received a close visual inspection and an electrical test of its Copeland Scroll compressor.

The pictures mainly show the diagnostic stage of the project. A diagnostic visit means the technician is finding the real cause of the problem before replacing parts. This is important because several different failures can cause an Air Conditioner to stop cooling.

Opening and Inspecting the Packaged AC Unit

The first pictures show the service panel removed from the side of the HVAC cabinet. This gives the technician access to the indoor coil, refrigerant tubing, blower section, wiring, and compressor area.

The evaporator coil can be seen near the bottom left of the cabinet. An evaporator coil is the part that absorbs heat from the air inside the building. Refrigerant moves through the copper tubes while the blower pushes indoor air across the coil.

The coil and surrounding cabinet had a heavy layer of dust and dirt. Some of the copper tubing also showed normal aging and surface discoloration. Dirt can block airflow across a coil. When less air moves through the system, the central AC may run longer and have a harder time reaching the thermostat setting.

The blower section was also inspected. The blower is the fan that moves cooled air through the duct system. A weak blower motor, dirty wheel, damaged wire, or loose connection can reduce airflow even when the compressor is still running.

Checking the Outdoor Ductwork

The next group of pictures shows the large metal supply and return ducts connected to the packaged unit. These ducts carry warm air into the system and send cooled air back into the building.

The ductwork appeared heavily weathered. Several joints had old sealant, worn insulation, and visible gaps around the connections. A duct leak is an opening that allows air to escape. For example, cooled air may leak outside before it reaches the rooms.

Leaks on the return side can also allow hot outdoor air, dirt, and dust to enter the Cooling system. This can make the equipment work harder and may raise energy use. Sealing loose duct joints and replacing damaged insulation can help more of the conditioned air reach the living space.

Duct condition is an important part of any air conditioning system check. Replacing an electrical part will not solve a comfort problem when a large amount of cooled air is escaping through damaged ductwork.

Inspecting the Condenser Cabinet

The outside views show an older condenser coil and cabinet. The condenser coil releases heat that the refrigerant collected from inside the building. Outdoor air must move through this coil so the system can remove that heat.

The cabinet showed years of sun, dust, and weather exposure. The coil surface also appeared dirty. A blocked condenser coil may cause higher operating pressure and longer run times. It can also place more stress on the compressor during hot Las Vegas weather.

Before cleaning or repairing this section, power must be turned off at the disconnect box. The disconnect is the electrical switch mounted near the unit. It allows a technician to safely cut power to the Heating and Cooling equipment.

Identifying the Copeland Scroll Compressor

One close-up picture shows the compressor label. The system contains a Copeland Scroll compressor with model number ZR42K5E-PFV-800.

A scroll compressor uses two spiral-shaped pieces to squeeze the refrigerant. One piece stays still while the other moves in a small circle. This design normally provides smooth and steady refrigerant movement.

The compressor is often called the heart of an Air Conditioning system. It moves refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor coils. If it cannot start, cannot build pressure, or develops an electrical problem, the system may blow warm air or stop running.

Reading the compressor model number also helps the technician check the correct electrical information and locate a proper replacement when one is needed. This prevents installing a compressor with the wrong voltage, capacity, or refrigerant application.

Testing the Compressor’s Electrical Insulation

The final picture shows a megohmmeter being used during the diagnosis. A megohmmeter is a special electrical tester that checks the insulation around motor windings. Windings are coils of wire inside a compressor motor.

The insulation keeps electricity inside those wires. When the insulation becomes weak, electricity may begin leaking toward the metal compressor shell. This is sometimes called a compressor leaking to ground.

The tester appears to be showing a reading in the red, low-resistance area. A megohm is a unit used to measure very high electrical resistance. A low reading may point to weak or damaged insulation inside the compressor.

This test alone should not be used to make the entire repair decision. The technician should also check each compressor terminal, wiring condition, capacitor, contactor, operating amperage, and refrigerant pressures. Amperage means the amount of electrical current a part is using while it runs.

Moisture, dirty terminals, damaged wires, and refrigerant contamination can sometimes affect test results. Confirming the reading helps prevent replacing an expensive compressor before the full problem is understood.
