Diagnosing and Repairing a Central Air Conditioning System in Las Vegas

On this service call, the Fast Affordable Air team was called out to a home in Las Vegas after the central air conditioner stopped cooling properly. Upon arrival, our certified HVAC technician began a step-by-step diagnosis using professional tools including a Fieldpiece SC260 multimeter and Yellow Jacket manifold gauges.

Step 1: Checking the Refrigerant Pressure

Using our Yellow Jacket gauges, we connected to the high (red) and low (blue) pressure ports on the outdoor condenser unit. The pressures were below expected levels, especially on the low side, which could mean the system had a refrigerant undercharge or a potential restriction.

When refrigerant levels are off, the system can’t cool air efficiently. The blue gauge (low pressure) showed signs that the evaporator coil might be freezing, which blocks airflow and reduces performance.

Step 2: Inspecting the Dual Run Capacitor

Next, we inspected the dual run capacitor labeled “RIP,” which powers both the condenser fan motor and compressor. Capacitors store electrical energy and help start these components. If the capacitor fails, the fan or compressor may not run, causing poor or no cooling.

We used a multimeter to test the capacitance. The reading on one side was only 7.0 µF (microfarads), while the label on the capacitor called for a higher rating. That’s a clear indicator the capacitor is weak or failing and needed to be replaced.

Step 3: Electrical Testing with Fieldpiece Tools

We performed additional electrical diagnostics on the control board, contactor, and wiring harness. The voltage reading was 238.7 volts AC, confirming that power was reaching the unit. The contactor was responsive, so the problem was narrowed down to either the capacitor or motor windings.

Step 4: Condenser Fan Motor Diagnosis

The condenser fan was not spinning, even though the compressor tried to kick on. This could result in overheating and shutdown or poor refrigerant cycle performance. After further testing, we confirmed that the Protech condenser fan motor had failed. The replacement was matched for size, RPM, and voltage using OEM specifications.

Step 5: Refrigerant Recharge and System Testing

After installing the new capacitor and motor, we tested refrigerant pressures again. The suction pressure (blue side) and head pressure (red side) were now within range for R-410A refrigerant, confirming proper heat exchange. Cool air was once again blowing through the home’s vents.

Replacing a faulty capacitor and condenser fan motor restores proper airflow across the coil, allows refrigerant to circulate effectively, and reduces the risk of compressor damage. Proper pressures help the system run more efficiently, keeping energy bills lower and indoor air more comfortable—even in the Las Vegas heat.
