A central Air Conditioning system can still turn on while struggling to cool the home properly. Sometimes the outdoor fan starts slowly. In other cases, it may stop running after the unit becomes hot. This Goodman Air Conditioner in the Las Vegas Valley needed a careful electrical inspection and an indoor airflow check.
The project included checking the temperature at an indoor grille, inspecting the outdoor condenser, testing the existing dual-run capacitor, reviewing the electrical connections, and installing a dedicated 5 MFD run capacitor for the condenser fan circuit.
Checking the Indoor Temperature and Airflow
The first picture shows an infrared thermometer aimed at an indoor grille. The surface reading was approximately 77.2°F. An infrared thermometer reads the temperature of a surface rather than the exact temperature of the moving air. It gives the technician a quick starting point before more detailed testing.
The return grille also had a heavy layer of dust. A return grille is the large vent that pulls room air back into the Heating and Cooling system. The AC then cools that air and sends it back through the supply vents.
Dust on the return grille may reduce airflow, especially when the air filter behind it is also dirty. Restricted airflow can make the blower work harder, reduce Cooling performance, and increase the amount of time the central AC must run. Cleaning the grille and inspecting the filter are important parts of an air conditioning tune-up.
Inspecting the Goodman Outdoor Condenser
The outdoor cabinet is called the condenser. It contains the compressor, condenser fan motor, electrical contactor, capacitor, coil, and other important parts. The condenser releases heat that the Air Conditioner collected from inside the home.
The Goodman condenser was visually inspected before the electrical panel was opened. The cabinet, electrical conduit, refrigerant lines, disconnect box, and outdoor coil area were checked for visible damage or loose components.
Power must be safely disconnected before working inside this section. An HVAC capacitor can hold an electrical charge even after the system has been turned off. Capacitor testing and replacement should therefore be handled by a trained technician.
Testing the Existing 70/5 Microfarad Capacitor
The original silver component shown in the pictures is a dual-run capacitor. A dual-run capacitor contains two capacitors inside one metal can. One section supports the compressor, while the other section supports the condenser fan motor.
The label showed a rating of 70/5 µF and 440 VAC. The 70 µF section is normally used by the compressor. The 5 µF section is normally used by the outdoor fan motor.
The letters µF mean microfarads. Some capacitor labels use MFD to mean the same thing. Microfarads measure how much electrical energy the capacitor can store and release to help a motor run.
A Fieldpiece SC260 meter was placed in capacitance mode during the inspection. The meter displayed approximately 76.4 µF during one part of the test. The technician compared the meter reading with the capacitor label, motor requirements, wiring arrangement, and operating condition of the system.
A capacitor must be tested correctly and isolated from the circuit when required. Testing it while other wires or components remain connected can affect the reading. This is why technicians do not make a repair decision from one number alone.
Installing a Dedicated 5 MFD Fan Capacitor
The repair pictures show a separate 5 MFD, 440 VAC run capacitor installed next to the original dual-run capacitor. This dedicated capacitor was connected to support the condenser fan motor circuit.
The capacitance rating must match the fan motor’s requirement. Installing the wrong microfarad rating can cause the motor to run hot, struggle to start, use too much electricity, or fail early. The 440 VAC marking is the capacitor’s voltage rating. It shows the voltage level the component is designed to handle.
The smaller capacitor was secured beside the existing capacitor so it would not move around inside the cabinet. The terminals were positioned away from the metal panel, and the electrical wires were reconnected to the correct locations.
The original dual-run capacitor remained in place for the section of the system that was still being used. Separating the fan circuit with its own properly rated capacitor can restore reliable fan operation without changing the entire outdoor unit.
Reviewing the Contactor and Electrical Connections
The contactor can be seen near the bottom of the electrical compartment. A contactor is an electrical switch controlled by the thermostat. When the thermostat asks for Cooling, the contactor closes and sends power to the compressor and outdoor fan.
The technician checked the wires around the capacitor and contactor for loose terminals, heat damage, worn insulation, and incorrect placement. Loose electrical connections can create heat and may cause the central Air Conditioner to stop unexpectedly.
After the separate fan capacitor was installed, the wiring was organized and the components were secured inside the Goodman condenser cabinet. The completed setup is visible in the final repair pictures.

Airflow Items Observed During the Project
The dusty indoor return grille should be cleaned, and the air filter should be inspected or replaced when necessary. A clean return path allows the blower to move air more easily through the central Air Conditioning system.
Routine AC maintenance can include capacitor testing, electrical inspections, filter checks, coil inspections, temperature measurements, and an evaluation of the complete Cooling cycle.
