Our latest project at Fast Affordable Air involved a full system inspection and repair of a residential heating and cooling system in Las Vegas. This service call covered a variety of issues including indoor airflow, motor performance, control wiring, and outdoor compressor diagnostics.
Blower Motor Cleaning and Evaluation
The first picture reveals a close-up of a heavily dust-covered blower motor and wheel. This buildup of dust and debris can severely impact airflow, causing the system to run longer and use more energy to maintain desired temperatures. We carefully cleaned the motor housing and wheel to restore proper airflow and reduce system strain.
When blower wheels collect that much dust, they become imbalanced and can vibrate or make noise. Left unchecked, this condition might damage the motor bearings or limit switch.
Gas Furnace Inspection
Next, we inspected the gas furnace cabinet, looking at the inducer motor, gas valve, ignitor, and flame sensor. All connections were checked for tightness and signs of overheating. The yellow corrugated line seen in the image is the flexible gas line, which we verified was leak-free using bubble solution.
Gas furnaces rely on a sequence of safety checks before ignition. Any issue here can prevent the heating cycle from starting properly, especially when airflow problems exist due to a dirty blower wheel.
Attic Air Handler Assessment
Inside the attic, we inspected the air handler connected to the central cooling system. This unit is responsible for moving cooled air through the home. We verified insulation on the refrigerant lines and checked the horizontal mounting to ensure it was secure and level to prevent drain issues.
This particular air handler is part of a split system where the condenser sits outside. Keeping the attic unit clean and insulated is essential for efficiency—especially during hot Las Vegas summers.
Capacitor and Voltage Testing
Outside, we examined the AC condenser, which was paired with a capacitor responsible for starting the compressor and fan motor. Using a Fieldpiece SC260 clamp meter, we recorded a current reading of 7.23 amps while testing. This helps verify that the components are receiving proper power under load.
A capacitor stores electrical energy like a battery and releases it to help motors start. If it’s weak, the system might hum, trip breakers, or fail to cool effectively.
Control Board Inspection
We then accessed the blower compartment to inspect the control board. This circuit board manages how the furnace and AC communicate. We verified wire connections, relay clicks, and made sure the board wasn’t showing any fault codes.
The board includes low-voltage connections for the thermostat, safety switches, and fan settings. A malfunctioning board could cause issues like short-cycling or no response to the thermostat.
Outdoor Condenser Refrigerant Check
Lastly, we connected manifold gauges to the outdoor unit to check refrigerant pressures. This system uses R-410A, a high-efficiency refrigerant common in modern systems. The pressure readings looked good, confirming no major refrigerant leaks and that the system was cooling effectively.
Maintaining proper refrigerant levels helps the compressor work less and cool more. An undercharged system can freeze over or cause long-term compressor damage.

This service visit involved diagnosing performance issues caused by dust buildup, verifying electrical and gas safety, testing component health, and confirming refrigerant charge.
