This air conditioning service project focused on a serious airflow problem caused by very dirty filters. The home had several large return-air grilles with filters that were covered in thick dust. The attic also contained a Lennox Heating and Cooling system connected to flexible ductwork, while the outdoor condenser was installed beside the home.
An air conditioner needs to breathe. It pulls warm air from the house, passes that air through a filter, cools it, and sends it back into the rooms. When the filters become packed with dirt, the central AC must work much harder to move air.
Fast Affordable Air inspected the system from the return grilles inside the home to the attic equipment and the outdoor condenser. This full-system approach helps find the cause of weak airflow instead of only looking at one part of the AC.
Inspecting the Dirty Return-Air Filters
The first pictures show filters installed behind large return-air grilles. A return grille is the opening where the Air Conditioning system pulls air out of the home. The filter catches dust, hair, lint, and other small particles before they enter the equipment.
These filters were heavily clogged. Much of the filter material had turned dark gray because of the amount of dirt trapped inside it. Some dust was also collecting around the grille openings.
A clogged filter can cause several problems:
- Weak airflow from the supply vents
- Rooms that take longer to cool
- Higher electricity use
- Extra strain on the blower motor
- Ice forming on the indoor cooling coil
- More dust collecting inside the HVAC system
The blower motor is the fan inside the system that pushes air through the ducts. When a filter is blocked, the blower tries to pull air through a surface that can no longer breathe properly. It is similar to trying to drink through a pinched straw.
Removing and Replacing the Clogged Filters
The dirty filters were removed from the return openings so clean replacement filters could be installed. A replacement filter must be the correct size. It should fit inside the grille without large gaps around the edges.
A filter that is too small may allow dust to pass around it. A filter that is too restrictive may also reduce airflow, even when it is new. The filter type should match the needs of the home and the design of the central Air Conditioner.
Filter replacement is also part of a proper air conditioning tune-up. During a tune-up, the technician can check whether the filter condition has already affected airflow, electrical parts, refrigerant operation, or the indoor coil.
Checking the Return Grilles
The return grilles were inspected for heavy dust and blocked openings. These grilles must remain open. Furniture, boxes, curtains, and other objects should not cover them.
Closing or blocking a return opening can make it harder for the system to collect enough air. Even a good Air Conditioner cannot cool a home properly when it does not receive enough return air.
Dust around a grille does not always mean the duct is dirty. Some dust may collect because air is passing through small gaps around the grille or because the filter has not been changed for a long time. The technician must inspect the area before deciding whether additional duct cleaning or sealing is needed.
Inspecting the Outdoor Condenser
The next picture shows the outdoor condenser beside the home. The condenser is the large outdoor part of a split air conditioning system. It releases heat that was removed from inside the house.
The cabinet, electrical disconnect, refrigerant lines, and space around the unit were visually checked. The electrical disconnect is the small box mounted near the condenser. It allows power to be safely shut off while the equipment is being serviced.
The outdoor unit needs enough open space for air to move through its coil. Leaves, stored items, weeds, and other objects should not block the sides or top. Poor outdoor airflow can raise operating pressure and make the compressor work harder.
Inspecting the Lennox Attic Equipment
The remaining pictures show the indoor Lennox equipment installed horizontally in the attic. During the cooling season, the blower inside this cabinet moves air across the indoor cooling coil and through the home’s duct system.
The technician inspected the cabinet and the nearby connections. This included the flexible ducts, metal plenum, electrical wiring, gas line, and vent pipe.
A plenum is the large air box connected to the HVAC equipment. It helps collect or distribute air before it enters the ducts. Loose plenum or duct connections can allow cooled air to leak into the attic instead of reaching the rooms.
The large black flexible ducts were also checked for crushed sections, tears, loose connections, and damaged insulation. Duct insulation helps keep the cooled air cold while it travels through a hot Las Vegas attic.
The metal vent pipe carries combustion gases away from the furnace during heating operation. Even though this project involved Cooling performance, the venting and gas connections should still be inspected whenever a technician is working around an attic furnace.
Testing Airflow and Cooling Performance
After restoring proper filter airflow, the system can be operated and checked again. The technician listens to the blower, checks air movement at the vents, and compares the temperature of the return air with the cooled supply air.
This temperature difference helps show whether the central cooling system is removing heat. It must be considered together with airflow, outdoor temperature, indoor humidity, filter condition, and equipment settings.
Replacing a clogged filter may improve performance quickly, but it does not prove that every part of the system is working correctly. A full AC repair inspection may also include checking the capacitor, electrical connections, blower motor, refrigerant operation, drain system, and indoor coil.
