Residential AC Repair and Refrigerant Testing in the Las Vegas Valley

An Air Conditioner can run without cooling the home correctly. The outdoor unit may turn on, the fan may spin, and air may come from the vents, but the rooms can still feel warm. That is why a complete diagnosis is important before making an air conditioning repair.

For this residential project in the Las Vegas Valley, a Fast Affordable Air technician inspected the outdoor condenser, refrigerant lines, attic ductwork, drainage system, and Lennox indoor heating and cooling equipment. The technician also connected a set of manifold gauges to check how the central AC was operating.

This step-by-step inspection helps find the real cause of a cooling problem instead of guessing and replacing parts that may still be working.

Inspecting the Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit

The first part of the project took place at the outdoor condenser. The condenser is the large metal unit outside the home. It releases heat that the Air Conditioning system removes from inside the house.

The technician placed the service tools near the unit and looked over the condenser cabinet, protective coil covering, refrigerant connections, wiring area, and surrounding space. A condenser needs room around it so outdoor air can move through the coil.

The dark protective screen around this unit helps block larger debris from reaching the coil. The technician still needs to check behind the screen because dust and small pieces of debris can reduce airflow.

Airflow means the movement of air through the HVAC system. Weak airflow can make the compressor work harder and may reduce the amount of cooling delivered to the home.

Checking the Refrigerant Lines

The next step was checking the refrigerant lines between the outdoor condenser and the indoor equipment. These lines carry refrigerant back and forth through the cooling system.

Refrigerant is the material that absorbs heat inside the home and carries it outside. It does not get used up like gasoline. If the system is low, there may be a leak or another condition that must be diagnosed.

The larger line in the photo is covered with insulation. This is commonly called the suction line. The insulation helps keep heat from entering the cold refrigerant as it travels toward the outdoor compressor.

The technician looked for damaged insulation, oily spots, loose fittings, rubbing lines, and other signs of trouble. Oil near a refrigerant connection can sometimes point to a leak because refrigerant oil travels through the system with the refrigerant.

Inspecting the Lennox Furnace and Indoor Equipment

The indoor part of this central Air Conditioning system is located in the attic. The photos show a Lennox furnace connected to the cooling coil, metal air boxes, flexible ducts, a gas line, and drain piping.

Although the furnace provides heat during colder weather, its blower is also used during the cooling season. The blower is a large fan inside the equipment. It moves warm indoor air across the cold evaporator coil and sends cooled air back through the ducts.

The technician inspected the Lennox cabinet, access panels, electrical wiring, gas connection, and the areas where the equipment joins the ductwork. Loose panels and gaps around these connections may allow conditioned air to escape into the attic.

The evaporator coil is normally installed near the furnace. This is the indoor coil that becomes cold while the AC is running. Warm household air moves across it, and heat is transferred into the refrigerant.

Properly servicing the Lennox indoor equipment helps the blower and cooling coil work together. This can provide more even Central Cooling and reduce the strain placed on the outdoor condenser.

Examining the Duct Connections and Air Seals

The attic photos also show the metal plenum and flexible ductwork connected to the HVAC equipment. A plenum is a large metal air box that collects or distributes air. One side brings air into the system, while the other side sends cooled air toward the rooms.

Some of the duct connections appear to have been covered with sealing material. HVAC technicians often use a thick sealant called mastic around these joints. Mastic helps close small openings where cooled air could escape.

Air leaks in a hot attic can waste cooling. The Air Conditioner may run longer because part of the cold air never reaches the living space. Sealed connections help deliver more of the available cooling to the rooms where it is needed.

The technician also checked the flexible ducts for crushed sections, loose connections, damaged outer coverings, and sharp bends. A badly bent duct is similar to a bent drinking straw. Air cannot move through it easily.

Checking the Condensate Drain

White PVC drainpipes can be seen near the indoor equipment. These pipes remove water produced during the cooling process.

When warm air touches the cold indoor coil, moisture can turn into water. This is called condensation. It is similar to the water that forms on the outside of a cold glass.

The drain must remain open so this water can leave the system. A clogged drain may cause water damage, ceiling stains, high indoor humidity, or a safety switch that shuts down the central AC.

Using the Attic Access for a Complete Inspection

The attic access panel allowed the technician to reach the furnace, evaporator coil, drain, and duct connections. An outdoor-only inspection would not show problems inside this part of the system.

A full heating and cooling diagnosis should examine both sides of the equipment. The outdoor condenser and indoor unit depend on each other. A problem with indoor airflow can even change the refrigerant pressure readings measured outside.

Testing the System With Manifold Gauges

The final photo shows a manifold gauge set connected to the outdoor unit. Manifold gauges are tools used to read the low-side and high-side operating pressures of an AC system.

The blue gauge is normally used for the low-pressure side. The red gauge is normally used for the high-pressure side. Technicians compare these readings with the outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, equipment specifications, airflow, and refrigerant type.

A pressure reading alone does not prove that refrigerant must be added. High or low readings can also be caused by dirty coils, restricted airflow, a weak blower, a refrigerant restriction, an overcharged system, or another mechanical problem.

This is why refrigerant testing should be completed as part of a larger diagnosis. The technician may also calculate superheat and subcooling. These are temperature measurements that help show how refrigerant is moving and changing inside the system.
