Rheem Rooftop Air Conditioning Repair, Airflow Check, and Duct Sealing in Las Vegas

This Air Conditioning project involved a Rheem Classic rooftop package unit in the Las Vegas area. A package unit is an HVAC system that keeps most of the Heating and Cooling parts inside one large cabinet. The cabinet sits on the roof and connects to the building through large air openings underneath it.

The Fast Affordable Air technician opened the system, tested its refrigerant operation, inspected the blower assembly, examined the evaporator coil, and checked the sealed connection between the Air Conditioner and the ductwork. These steps help locate problems that can cause weak airflow, uneven room temperatures, long cooling cycles, or higher energy use.

Testing the Refrigerant System With Manifold Gauges

The first photo shows a set of JB manifold gauges connected to the central AC system. Manifold gauges are tools that let an HVAC technician measure refrigerant pressure on the low-pressure and high-pressure sides of the system.

Refrigerant is the special fluid that absorbs heat from the indoor air and carries that heat outside. It does not simply make cold air. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another.

Pressure readings cannot be judged by looking at one number alone. The technician must also consider the refrigerant type, outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, and equipment specifications. The gauges in the photo were used as part of a complete system check rather than as the only test.

Correct refrigerant operation helps the Cooling system remove heat properly. A system with an incorrect charge may run longer, cool poorly, freeze the indoor coil, or place extra stress on the compressor.

Opening the Rheem Rooftop Package Unit

The next photo shows the Rheem Classic package unit with its service panels removed. The gauges remained connected while electrical and mechanical areas were inspected. A digital meter was also placed near the controls.

A digital meter is used to check electrical measurements such as voltage, resistance, and amperage. Amperage tells the technician how much electrical current a motor or other part is using.

Removing the panels gave the technician access to the controls, refrigerant connections, blower section, and evaporator coil. Rooftop work must be performed carefully because the metal cabinet and roof surface can become extremely hot in the Las Vegas sun.

Checking the Genteq Blower Motor and Blower Wheel

Several photos provide a close look at the blower assembly. The round metal housing contains a blower wheel powered by a Genteq motor. The blower wheel works like a strong fan. It pulls air through the return duct, moves it across the evaporator coil, and pushes cooled air into the supply ducts.

The blower motor, mounting arms, wires, housing, and direction of rotation were inspected. The rotation arrow on the housing is important because the blower wheel must turn in the correct direction to move the proper amount of air.

Even when the refrigerant side of an Air Conditioner is working, a blower problem can make the home feel warm. A slow, damaged, or incorrectly rotating blower may cause weak air at the vents. It can also allow the evaporator coil to become too cold and freeze.

Proper airflow helps the central Air Conditioner cool rooms more evenly. It may also reduce wasted electricity because the system does not need to run as long to move cool air through the building.

Inspecting the Evaporator Coil

The tall section covered with thin metal fins is the evaporator coil. This coil becomes cold during a cooling cycle. Warm indoor air passes across it, and the refrigerant inside the coil absorbs heat from that air.

The coil surface shown in the photos appears open and generally clean, with the narrow fins visible from top to bottom. This matters because dirt can form a blanket over the coil. That blanket blocks airflow and makes it harder for the Air Conditioning system to collect heat.

The technician also checked the coil area from more than one angle. Looking at only the front surface may not reveal dust, bent fins, water marks, or blocked sections deeper inside the cabinet.

A clean coil and steady airflow support better heat transfer. Heat transfer means moving heat from the indoor air into the refrigerant. Better heat transfer can improve comfort and help the HVAC equipment operate without unnecessary strain.

Checking and Sealing the Rooftop Duct Opening

The lower photos show the large air opening underneath the package unit. This opening connects the rooftop equipment to the building’s duct system. The edges were covered with insulation and sealed around the metal connection.

Gray duct mastic can be seen around portions of the opening. Mastic is a thick sealant made for HVAC ducts. It fills cracks and small gaps where conditioned air might escape.

A loose rooftop connection can waste cooled air before it reaches the rooms. It may also pull very hot roof air, dust, or outdoor air into the system. Sealing the connection helps keep the air inside the intended pathway.

The insulated cabinet walls also help protect the cooled air from the heat surrounding the rooftop unit. Insulation slows unwanted heat movement through the metal cabinet.
