Rooftop Air Conditioning Repair and Capacitor Testing in the Las Vegas Valley

Rooftop Air Conditioning equipment works under some of the hardest conditions in the Las Vegas Valley. The cabinet sits in direct sunlight while dust, wind, and high outdoor temperatures place extra stress on the electrical parts and refrigeration system.

During this project, the Fast Affordable Air technician inspected two roof-mounted HVAC units. The work included refrigerant pressure checks, electrical testing, capacitor testing, and a final system performance check.

Inspecting the Rooftop Air Conditioners

The first step was checking the condition of both rooftop units and the surrounding work area. The technician looked at the cabinets, electrical connections, refrigerant lines, access panels, and airflow openings.

Rooftop access can make an Air Conditioning repair more difficult. Tools and replacement parts must be safely carried to the roof. The technician must also work carefully around roof tiles, sealed roof surfaces, electrical wiring, and nearby equipment.

A visual inspection can uncover problems such as loose wires, damaged insulation, burned electrical terminals, oil marks near refrigerant connections, and panels that are not properly secured. Finding these problems early can help prevent a more expensive Cooling failure later.

Checking Refrigerant Pressures

The technician connected a manifold gauge set to the Air Conditioner. A manifold gauge set is the tool with the red and blue pressure dials shown in the photos. It allows an HVAC technician to see what is happening on the high-pressure and low-pressure sides of the refrigerant system.

Refrigerant is the special fluid that carries heat out of the building. When refrigerant moves through the system, it changes between a liquid and a gas. The gauge readings help the technician determine whether the compressor is pumping and whether the system may have an airflow, refrigerant, or mechanical problem.

Pressure readings should not be used alone. Outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, refrigerant type, and equipment specifications must also be considered. Adding refrigerant just because one gauge appears low can cause new problems if the real issue is a dirty coil, weak fan, restricted airflow, or failing electrical part.

Testing the Electrical Load

A Fieldpiece SC440 clamp meter was used during the electrical inspection. This tool can measure current, voltage, resistance, and capacitor strength.

Current is the flow of electricity through a wire. It is measured in amps. Checking the electrical load helps the technician see whether the compressor and fan motors are working too hard.

A motor may pull too much current when it is overheating, struggling to start, operating with a weak capacitor, or facing high pressure inside the refrigerant system. Catching an unusual reading can help protect the compressor from serious damage.

The Fieldpiece meter allows the technician to collect real readings instead of guessing. These readings can then be compared with the information printed on the HVAC equipment label.

Inspecting the Dual-Run Capacitors

The photos show two different dual-run capacitors inside the rooftop systems. A dual-run capacitor is a small metal part that helps start and operate both the compressor and the condenser fan motor.

One capacitor was rated at 55 + 7.5 microfarads and 440 VAC. Another was rated at 45 + 10 microfarads and 370 VAC.

A microfarad, sometimes written as µF or MFD, measures capacitance. Capacitance tells us how much electrical charge the part can store. The two numbers on a dual-run capacitor serve two different components. The larger number normally serves the compressor, while the smaller number normally serves the fan motor.

The VAC number is the capacitor’s voltage rating. It shows the maximum alternating-current voltage the capacitor is designed to handle. A replacement capacitor must have the correct microfarad rating and an approved voltage rating.

Verifying the Capacitor Strength

The Fieldpiece SC440 was also used to measure capacitor strength. One photographed test showed a reading of about 44.9 during the capacitor inspection. That reading is very close to the 45-microfarad rating printed on one of the capacitors.

Technicians also check the smaller fan section of a dual-run capacitor. Both sections matter. A compressor may operate normally while the fan side is weak, or the fan may run while the compressor side is outside its allowed range.

Each capacitor has a tolerance printed on its label. Tolerance is the small amount the reading is allowed to be above or below the listed number. A capacitor can still look clean and new on the outside while testing weak inside.

A weak capacitor can cause several problems, including:

  • A compressor that hums but does not start
  • A condenser fan that starts slowly or stops
  • Higher electrical stress on the motors
  • Intermittent Cooling
  • The Air Conditioner shutting off on a hot afternoon
  • Damage to a compressor or fan motor if the problem continues

Running the Central Air Conditioning System

After the electrical parts were checked, the central Air Conditioning equipment was operated while the technician watched the gauges, fan, compressor, and meter readings.

This live test is important because some problems only appear while the equipment is running. A wire may look secure when the system is off but become hot under a heavy electrical load. Refrigerant pressure may also change quickly when the condenser fan or compressor is not working correctly.

The technician checked that the outdoor fan moved air through the condenser coil. The condenser coil is the part that releases heat outdoors. Good airflow helps the refrigerant get rid of the heat removed from the building.

Restricted airflow can increase system pressure, compressor temperature, and power use. That is why coil condition and fan operation are important parts of professional air conditioning repair.
