Fast Affordable Air recently inspected and serviced a residential rooftop Air Conditioning system in the Las Vegas area. The Cooling system used a packaged HVAC unit. A packaged unit keeps the compressor, coils, blower, and other important Heating and Cooling parts inside one large cabinet on the roof.
The project included checking a heavily loaded return-air filter, inspecting the smart thermostat wiring, testing refrigerant pressures, measuring electrical performance, and examining the parts inside the rooftop Air Conditioner. These steps helped the technician look at the whole central AC system instead of guessing which part was causing the problem.
Inspecting the Return-Air Filter
The first pictures show a ceiling return grille with a metal air filter behind it. A return grille is the large vent that pulls warm room air back into the central Air Conditioning system.
The filter had a thick layer of dust and dirt across its surface. This buildup can block airflow. Think about trying to breathe through a blanket. The thicker the blanket becomes, the harder it is to pull air through it.
Restricted airflow can make an Air Conditioner run longer while delivering less cool air. It can also place extra strain on the blower motor. The blower motor is the part that pushes air through the ductwork and into the rooms.
A dirty filter may also cause the evaporator coil to become too cold and freeze. The evaporator coil is the cold part of the AC where heat is removed from the indoor air. Cleaning or replacing a loaded filter helps the system breathe and supports more even airflow throughout the home.
Checking the Smart Thermostat and Wiring
The next indoor picture shows the wiring base behind the round smart thermostat. The technician removed the thermostat face so the wire connections could be inspected.
Each thermostat wire controls a different job. The Y terminal normally starts Cooling. The G terminal controls the indoor fan. The C and R terminals provide electrical power. Other terminals may control heating or extra equipment.
A loose wire or poor connection can stop the central AC from starting correctly. It can also cause the fan, compressor, or heating equipment to operate at the wrong time. Checking these connections helps confirm that the thermostat is sending the proper commands to the rooftop unit.
Inspecting the Rooftop Package Unit
After checking the indoor equipment, the technician safely accessed the sloped tile roof. The pictures show the packaged Air Conditioner mounted beside a large metal duct transition. This transition connects the rooftop unit to the ductwork inside the home.
The technician inspected the cabinet, service panels, electrical conduit, drain piping, mounting frame, and nearby duct connection. Rooftop systems face strong sunlight, wind, dust, and high desert temperatures. These conditions can loosen panels, dry out wiring, damage seals, and increase wear on electrical parts.
The surrounding roof area was also checked before the service panels were opened. Safe footing and proper tool placement are especially important when HVAC repairs are completed on a sloped roof.
Testing Refrigerant Pressures
A JB manifold gauge set was connected to the Cooling system. A manifold gauge is a tool with a blue pressure dial, a red pressure dial, and service hoses.
The blue gauge checks the low-pressure side of the refrigeration system. The red gauge checks the high-pressure side. These readings show how refrigerant is moving through the compressor, coils, and copper tubing.
Refrigerant is the fluid that carries heat out of the home. It changes between a liquid and a gas as it moves through the system. Pressure readings can help reveal low refrigerant, excessive pressure, poor airflow, a restriction, or another operating problem.
A restriction is something that slows the movement of refrigerant. It works like a bend or clog in a garden hose. Refrigerant pressure must be compared with the outdoor temperature, indoor airflow, equipment specifications, and other test results before a repair decision is made.
Performing Electrical Tests
The pictures also show a Fieldpiece SC260 meter beside the manifold gauges. This professional meter can be used to test electrical voltage, current, resistance, and temperature.
Electrical testing helps the technician check whether motors and other components are receiving the correct power. A part that pulls too much electrical current may be overheating or working too hard. A part that pulls too little current may not be operating correctly.
Combining electrical measurements with refrigerant readings gives a clearer picture of the system’s condition. It also reduces the chance of replacing a part that is still working.
Inspecting the Compressor Compartment
One picture shows the inside of the packaged HVAC unit with the access panel removed. The large black part is the compressor. The compressor pumps refrigerant through the central Cooling system.
The technician inspected the compressor, copper refrigerant tubing, wiring, connectors, and nearby controls. The area was checked for loose wires, damaged insulation, oil marks, overheated connections, and signs of rubbing or vibration.
Oil around a refrigerant connection can sometimes point to a leak because refrigerant oil travels through the system with the refrigerant. However, a leak must be confirmed with proper testing instead of being judged from appearance alone.
