Rooftop Air Conditioning systems are common around Las Vegas because they keep much of the Heating and Cooling equipment outside the living space. In this recent project, the Fast Affordable Air team worked with an older rooftop HVAC package unit and inspected the parts of the system that can directly affect cooling, airflow, reliability, and energy use.
A package unit is an HVAC system that places most of the heating and cooling equipment inside one outdoor cabinet. Instead of having a separate indoor furnace or air handler and an outdoor condenser, much of the equipment is grouped together in one unit. On this home, the equipment was installed above the roof and connected to the house through rooftop ductwork.
The photos give us a good look at several important areas that should be checked when servicing an older rooftop Air Conditioner.
Inspecting the Rooftop AC Before Starting Work
The first step was looking over the entire installation rather than focusing on only one component. With an older central AC system, several small problems can sometimes work together and cause poor performance.
The technician checks how the HVAC cabinet is sitting on the rooftop support structure, how the ductwork connects to the unit, and whether electrical lines and other connections appear secure. Rooftop equipment also has to deal with direct sunlight, wind, rain, dust, and years of temperature changes.

The first picture gives us a direct view of the large dark coil on the outside of the AC cabinet. This is the condenser coil.
The condenser coil helps the Air Conditioning system move heat from inside the home to the outdoor air. Think of it like the radiator on a car. The AC collects heat from inside the house, and the condenser section helps release that heat outdoors.
That means the coil needs good airflow. Dirt, dust, leaves, and other debris can make it harder for heat to escape. When that happens, the Cooling system may need to run longer to do the same amount of work.
During service, the technician checks the condition of the coil and looks for anything that could restrict airflow. The cabinet and surrounding area are also inspected so air can move through the condenser section properly.

The second picture gives us a wider side view of the central Air Conditioner. It shows how the package unit sits above the roof instead of resting directly on the shingles.
The metal support underneath the HVAC system is important. A rooftop unit can be heavy, and it also creates vibration while the blower, compressor, and condenser fan are operating.
Vibration simply means the small shaking movement created by motors and other moving parts. Too much movement over time can place stress on duct connections, wiring, piping, and mounting points.
During an Air Conditioning repair or inspection, technicians look for loose supports, excessive movement, rust, damaged panels, and other conditions that could eventually cause trouble.

The third photo shows one of the most important parts of this installation, the large duct transition connected to the package unit.
A duct transition is a shaped section of ductwork that helps connect two openings that are different sizes or shapes. In simple terms, it works like an adapter between the AC cabinet and the home’s air ducts.
This area deserves attention because cooled air has to travel through it before reaching the rooms inside the home.
If a rooftop duct connection develops gaps or damaged sealing, some of the conditioned air can escape before it ever reaches the living area. In Las Vegas, losing cold air into the outdoor environment can make a Central Cooling system work harder than necessary.
The technician checks the duct transition for visible damage, loose sections, deteriorated material, and possible areas where air could leak.

The fourth picture shows another side of the HVAC cabinet along with the rooftop lines and conduit connected to the system.
Conduit is the protective tubing used around electrical wiring. It helps protect wires from physical damage and outdoor exposure.
During rooftop AC service, the technician checks that exterior connections are supported and routed correctly. Service panels are also examined because they protect important electrical and mechanical parts inside the Air Conditioner.
Once the exterior inspection is complete, a normal diagnostic procedure can include operating the system and checking items such as electrical performance, blower operation, condenser fan operation, compressor operation, airflow, and the temperature of the air entering and leaving the system.
These tests help determine whether the problem is coming from one component or from several conditions working together.
Why Airflow Matters So Much
An Air Conditioning system does more than make cold air. It has to move the correct amount of air through the house.
If airflow is restricted, rooms may cool unevenly and the central AC may run longer. Problems can come from dirty filters, dirty coils, blower issues, damaged ducts, blocked registers, or air leaks.
This is why checking the complete Heating and Cooling system is important instead of simply replacing a part and leaving.
Regular AC maintenance can also help identify developing airflow, electrical, coil, and mechanical problems before they become larger repair issues.
Benefits of Servicing an Older Rooftop Air Conditioner
A careful inspection and properly completed repair can provide several benefits for an older rooftop HVAC system.

- More consistent indoor comfort when airflow through the Cooling system and ductwork is working correctly.

Rooftop HVAC Systems in the Las Vegas Climate
Rooftop equipment has a difficult job in Southern Nevada. The system sits directly in the sun while trying to remove heat from the home below it. Dust and outdoor debris can also collect around coils and other exposed areas.
That makes regular inspection especially useful for older equipment. A system that still has years of service left may simply need maintenance or a repair, while a severely worn unit may eventually become a better candidate for replacement.

For this project, the exterior condition of the package unit, condenser coil, rooftop mounting, duct transition, cabinet, and visible connections all provided important information for evaluating how the Cooling system was installed and what areas deserved attention during service.
