Inspecting the Older Rooftop Cooling Equipment

The first photos give us a wide look at the roof and the existing cooling equipment. The unit is installed on a sloped shingle roof and connected to a raised roof transition.

A roof transition is the section that connects rooftop cooling equipment to the ductwork inside the home. Think of it like a bridge that allows cooled air from the equipment to enter the home’s air system.

Before working on equipment installed in this type of location, an HVAC technician must pay attention to both the cooling system and the surrounding roof. Rooftop equipment can be more difficult to access than equipment installed at ground level, and technicians need to avoid damaging shingles, flashing, vents, and other roofing materials while performing the work.

Checking the Airflow Surfaces

The second picture provides a closer view of one of the large air-contact surfaces on the older rooftop unit. The surface appears dark and weathered, with visible buildup and uneven areas.

The equipment has features that are consistent with an older evaporative-style cooling unit. An evaporative cooler, sometimes called a swamp cooler, cools air by moving outdoor air across water-wetted material. The thermostat is one of the simplest but most important parts of a Heating and Cooling system. It measures indoor temperature and tells the cooling equipment when cooling is needed.

During an Air Conditioning service visit, the thermostat reading can be compared with the actual room temperature and the operation of the rooftop equipment. If the thermostat is asking for cooling but the indoor temperature remains high, the technician knows that more diagnostic work may be needed.
