Fast Affordable Air recently completed an Air Conditioning diagnostic and service project on a rooftop package unit in the Las Vegas area. A package unit is an HVAC system that places most of the Heating and Cooling parts inside one large outdoor cabinet. These systems are commonly installed on flat roofs where they can deliver cooled air into the building through connected ductwork.
The photographs from this project show the condenser coil, evaporator coil, refrigerant lines, blower assembly, duct opening, service gauges, and exterior cabinet. Each section was inspected because one weak part can reduce the performance of the entire central Air Conditioning system.
Beginning With a Rooftop Safety and Visual Inspection
The technician first examined the condition of the rooftop AC unit and the area around it. The package unit was installed on a metal support frame above a flat commercial roof. The electrical disconnect, refrigerant piping, cabinet panels, and duct connections were checked for visible damage or loose sections.
An electrical disconnect is the outdoor switch or box that allows power to be shut off before the Air Conditioner is opened. Turning off the correct power source is an important safety step whenever panels, motors, wiring, or other internal components need to be inspected.
Several cabinet panels were then removed to provide access to the Cooling components. Removing these panels allowed the technician to inspect areas that cannot be seen from the outside.
Inspecting the Condenser Coil and Refrigerant Lines
The first close-up photographs show the condenser coil and its copper refrigerant tubing. The condenser coil is the part that releases heat outside. Refrigerant carries heat from inside the building to this outdoor coil, where the heat is transferred into the surrounding air.
The copper lines were inspected for rubbing, corrosion, oily residue, and other signs that could point to a refrigerant leak. The coil fins were also checked for dirt and damage. Fins are the thin metal strips surrounding the coil. They create a large surface area that helps the system release heat.
When these fins become heavily blocked, the central AC may run longer and place more stress on the compressor. Keeping the coil open and clean helps air move across it more easily.
Connecting HVAC Manifold Gauges
A manifold gauge set was connected to the package unit. These gauges allow an HVAC technician to measure refrigerant pressure on the high-pressure and low-pressure sides of the Cooling system.
Refrigerant pressure is only one part of an accurate diagnosis. The technician must also consider the outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, airflow, system condition, and the type of refrigerant used by the equipment. Adding refrigerant without completing these checks could hide the real problem or cause the unit to become overcharged.
An overcharged system contains too much refrigerant. This can increase pressure and make the compressor work harder. An undercharged system may have poor Cooling performance and could indicate a leak. Careful testing helps prevent unnecessary adjustments.
Checking the Evaporator Coil
The interior photographs also show the evaporator coil. This is the indoor coil located inside the rooftop cabinet. Warm return air from the building passes across this coil. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, and the system sends cooler air back through the ducts.
The coil surface was inspected for dirt, blocked fins, corrosion, and signs of moisture problems. A dirty evaporator coil can reduce airflow and make it harder for the Air Conditioning system to remove heat. In severe cases, restricted airflow can cause the coil to become too cold and freeze.
The lower section around the coil was also examined for rust and drainage concerns. Air Conditioners naturally create water while removing humidity from indoor air. This water must drain away correctly instead of collecting inside the cabinet.
Inspecting the Blower Motor and Wheel
Another open panel shows the blower assembly. The blower is the large round fan that pushes conditioned air through the building. Its motor, wiring connection, mounting hardware, and surrounding compartment were visually inspected.
Even when the refrigeration section is operating correctly, a weak or dirty blower can create poor indoor comfort. Reduced airflow may cause some rooms to feel warm while others receive more Cooling. It can also make the central Air Conditioner run for longer periods.
The blower wheel should spin smoothly and remain securely mounted. Dust buildup on the wheel can reduce the amount of air it moves. Electrical connections must also remain tight because loose wiring may lead to overheating or intermittent operation.
Examining the Rooftop Duct Opening
The photographs include a view inside the flexible duct connected to the rooftop HVAC unit. Ductwork carries cooled air from the package unit into the occupied areas of the building.
The technician checked the opening for heavy debris, damaged lining, gaps, and loose sealing material. Air leaks near a rooftop connection can allow cooled air to escape before it reaches the rooms below. Hot rooftop air may also enter the duct system through poorly sealed joints.
Proper duct sealing helps the system deliver more of the air produced by the equipment. It may also reduce long run times and uneven temperatures.

A complete diagnostic service looks at the entire Heating and Cooling process instead of focusing on only one component. Refrigerant pressure, coil condition, blower performance, electrical safety, drainage, and duct airflow all affect how well an Air Conditioner operates.
Correcting airflow restrictions and identifying weak components can help the AC reach the desired temperature with less strain. A system that does not need to run as long may use less electricity, although actual energy savings depend on the equipment, thermostat settings, building insulation, duct condition, and outdoor weather.
