Trane Rooftop Air Conditioning Repair and System Testing in Las Vegas

Rooftop AC systems have a tough job in Southern Nevada. They sit outside in the sun, collect dust, and may run for long hours when temperatures climb. Before opening the cabinet, an HVAC technician should look over the outside of the system. This includes checking the cabinet, electrical conduit, wiring, duct connections, roof penetration, and the condition of the area around the base.

Testing the Electrical System With a Fieldpiece Meter

Several photos show the technician using a Fieldpiece SC260 clamp meter. A clamp meter is an electrical testing tool that can measure electrical current by clamping around a wire. This lets the technician see how much electricity a motor or other component is using while it operates.

The technician checked the electrical performance of the system and compared the measurements with the ratings of the equipment. This is important because a motor can sometimes continue running even when it is beginning to struggle.

Electrical testing can help identify problems such as:

  • A motor drawing more electricity than it should

One of the meter photos shows an operating-current measurement of about 0.73 amps on the circuit being tested. The important part is not simply the number. The technician compares that reading with the motor or equipment rating to decide whether the component is operating normally.

Inspecting the Fan Motor and Wiring

Another photo gives a clear view of the motor assembly and several wire connections. Motors are important in any central Air Conditioner because air has to move across the coils for the Cooling system to work properly.

A loose connector or failing motor can reduce airflow. It can also cause the motor to run hotter and use more energy. Inspecting these connections while taking electrical readings gives the technician a much better picture of what the system is actually doing.

Checking Refrigerant Pressures

The final part of the diagnostic process included connecting a manifold gauge set to the refrigeration system.

A manifold gauge set is a tool HVAC technicians use to measure refrigerant pressure. It normally has a low-pressure gauge and a high-pressure gauge. These two readings help show what is happening as refrigerant travels through the Air Conditioning system.

Pressure alone does not tell the entire story. A proper diagnosis also considers airflow, temperatures, outdoor conditions, equipment specifications, and electrical operation. That is why checking the coil and blower before judging the refrigerant charge is so important.

If airflow is poor, refrigerant pressures may look abnormal even though refrigerant is not the original problem.
