Two-System Air Conditioning Repair and Attic HVAC Inspection in Las Vegas

This air conditioning project involved checking two cooling systems at a residential property in the Las Vegas Valley. One indoor HVAC unit was installed horizontally in the attic. The other furnace and air handler were installed in a garage utility area. Two outdoor condenser units were also inspected.

A home with two central AC systems may use one unit for the upstairs and another for the downstairs. This can improve comfort, but both systems must work correctly. A problem with one furnace, air handler, duct connection, electrical wire, or outdoor unit can leave part of the home warmer than the rest.

Our work focused on the indoor equipment, attic ductwork, electrical connections, vent pipes, and outdoor condensers. These are all important parts of a complete air conditioning repair in Las Vegas.

Inspecting the Attic Air Conditioning System

The first two pictures show a horizontal HVAC unit installed between the wooden attic supports. A horizontal unit lies on its side instead of standing upright. This type of installation is common when there is limited space inside the home.

We started by checking the equipment cabinet and the area around it. The cabinet holds important parts such as the blower motor, control board, burners, and evaporator coil. The blower is the large fan that moves conditioned air through the duct system.

Attics in Southern Nevada can become extremely hot. That heat makes small problems more serious. Loose wires, air leaks, blocked airflow, and weak electrical parts can place extra stress on an Air Conditioner.

During an attic inspection, a technician checks several areas:

  • The equipment panels are installed correctly
  • The blower can move enough air
  • The electrical wires are secure
  • The refrigerant lines are protected
  • The drain system can remove water
  • The duct connections do not have large air leaks
  • The metal vent pipe is properly connected

Checking the Flexible Ductwork and Airflow

The first picture shows flexible ductwork connected to the indoor unit. A flexible duct is a soft, insulated tube that carries heated or cooled air to different rooms.

Flexible ducts must be supported and kept as straight as possible. A crushed, torn, or sharply bent duct can reduce airflow. It works like a drinking straw that has been squeezed in the middle. The fan may still run, but less air reaches the room.

We checked the visible ducts for loose connections, damage, tight bends, and missing insulation. We also inspected the connection between the equipment and the main duct box.

This main box is called a plenum. A plenum collects air from the air handler and sends it into the duct system. Gaps around the plenum can allow cold air to escape into the attic. That wasted Cooling never reaches the living area.

Sealing these connections can help the home cool more evenly. It can also reduce the amount of time the central Air Conditioning system needs to run.

Inspecting the Garage Furnace and Air Handler

The third picture shows another indoor furnace installed in a garage utility space. This unit connects to a large return-air cabinet and ductwork above it.

Return air is the warm air pulled from the home and sent back to the HVAC system. The system removes heat from that air before sending it back through the supply vents.

We checked the return section for gaps that could pull garage dust into the system. We also inspected the furnace panels, refrigerant lines, drain piping, gas connection, and metal exhaust vent.

The exhaust vent carries combustion gases away from a gas furnace. It must remain connected and free of damage. A loose or damaged vent can create a safety problem, so it is an important part of every Heating and Cooling inspection.

The drain pipe was also checked. During normal Cooling operation, moisture collects on the cold evaporator coil. That water must flow safely into a drain. A blocked drain can cause water damage or shut the AC off when a safety switch detects a problem.

Examining the Lennox Equipment and Control Wiring

The fourth picture gives a closer view of the attic equipment. The visible cabinet carries Lennox branding. Beside the ductwork is a small electrical junction box with low-voltage control wiring.

Low-voltage wires carry small electrical signals between the thermostat and the HVAC equipment. These signals tell the system when to start the fan, furnace, or Air Conditioner.

We checked the visible wiring for loose connections, damaged insulation, and poor support. A weak connection can cause the system to start and stop, fail to respond to the thermostat, or display an error.

The metal duct connection was also examined for open seams. Any accessible gaps can be sealed with approved HVAC material. This helps keep conditioned air inside the duct instead of losing it in the attic.

Testing the Two Outdoor Condenser Units

The final picture shows two outdoor condensers beside the home. A condenser is the outdoor part of an Air Conditioning system. It releases heat that was removed from inside the house.

Because this property appears to have two systems, each outdoor condenser must be matched with the correct indoor unit and thermostat. During testing, a technician checks:

  • Condenser fan operation
  • Compressor startup
  • Electrical connections
  • Refrigerant line temperatures
  • Coil condition
  • Unusual sounds or shaking
  • Plants or debris blocking airflow

The plants provide shade around the equipment, but enough open space must remain around each unit. The condenser needs airflow to release heat. When leaves, dirt, or shrubs block the coil, the compressor may run longer and use more electricity.

Benefits of Servicing the Complete HVAC System

Checking only the outdoor unit may not reveal an attic duct leak, weak blower, drainage problem, or loose thermostat wire. That is why a complete diagnosis includes both the indoor and outdoor equipment.

This type of service can provide several benefits:

  • More even temperatures between rooms
  • Less cooled air escaping into the attic
  • Safer furnace venting and electrical connections
  • Lower strain on motors and compressors
