Fast Affordable Air worked on a central AC system in Las Vegas, Nevada. The goal was simple. Find out why the Air Conditioner was not cooling the way it should, check the Heating and Cooling equipment inside the attic, and verify the outdoor unit was running in a healthy range.

The photos show two big parts of a typical HVAC system. One part is in the attic. It includes the indoor unit, the duct connections, and the condensate drain piping. The other part is outside. It includes the outdoor condenser where heat leaves the home.

What we saw in the attic

In the attic, the system has a long indoor cabinet connected to large insulated ducts. These ducts carry air to the rooms and bring air back. We also see PVC drain lines under the unit. Those pipes carry away water that forms during Air Conditioning.

A key detail is the condensate drain. Condensate is the water that forms when warm air touches a cold coil. It is like water droplets on the outside of a cold drink on a hot day. If this drain gets clogged, water can overflow and cause damage, and some systems will shut off to prevent a leak.

The outdoor unit and why it matters

Outside, the condenser is the “heat dump” for the AC. When Central Cooling runs, the system pulls heat from inside the house and pushes it outside through the outdoor coil and fan.

A dirty outdoor coil, blocked airflow, or an electrical issue can make the Air Conditioning system work harder. That can raise energy bills and reduce comfort.

Step-by-step procedure based on the photos

1) Visual inspection of the indoor unit, ducts, and drain

  • We checked the attic-mounted indoor cabinet for signs of air leaks around the duct connections. Air leaks waste cooled air and make the central Air Conditioner run longer.
  • We inspected the insulation on the ducts. Insulation helps keep Cooling air cold as it travels through the attic. In a hot Las Vegas attic, insulation makes a big difference.
  • We looked at the condensate drain piping and fittings to make sure water can flow out correctly. We also checked for signs of past overflow or water staining.

2) Outdoor condenser inspection

  • We verified the outdoor fan area was clear. The unit needs breathing room so it can move heat out of the system.
  • We checked the refrigerant line set where it enters the home. The insulation on the larger suction line helps prevent heat gain and sweating.

3) Refrigerant pressure testing with digital gauges

The photos show Yellow Jacket digital gauges connected to the system and set for R-410A. Refrigerant is the special fluid inside the AC that moves heat. It does not “get used up” like gas in a car. If refrigerant is low, it usually means there is a leak that needs to be found and fixed.

We recorded operating pressures around 216.7 psig and 231.1 psig on the gauges during the check. Pressure readings help us understand how the HVAC system is behaving, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. We also compare pressures to indoor and outdoor temperatures, airflow, and equipment conditions.

A helpful term here is manifold gauge set. This is the tool used to connect to the system’s service ports to read pressures. Think of it like a “blood pressure cuff” for an Air Conditioner. It gives clues, but you still need the full checkup.

What these checks help us catch

  • Airflow problems such as leaky ducts or weak airflow across the indoor coil. Bad airflow can cause poor Cooling and even ice on the coil.
  • Drain issues such as clogs or poor slope that can lead to water damage and system shutdowns.
  • Outdoor heat transfer issues such as restricted airflow through the condenser coil. When the system cannot dump heat outside, the home does not cool well.
  • Refrigerant performance concerns using R-410A pressure readings as part of a wider diagnostic.
