Air Conditioning Repair: Belt Replacement, Frozen Suction Line, and Dirty Filter Diagnostics

Fast Affordable Air was recently called out to a rooftop HVAC unit serving a commercial property in Las Vegas. The complaint was reduced cooling and unusual noise from the system. Our licensed technician arrived quickly and began a full system diagnosis.

Diagnosing the Problem

Our first inspection revealed frost on the suction line — that’s the large copper pipe carrying refrigerant back to the compressor. When this line is covered in ice or condensation, it usually means one of two things: poor airflow or low refrigerant. Either can severely hurt your AC’s efficiency or even damage components like the compressor.

We then opened the blower section of the rooftop unit and immediately noticed a snapped fan belt. This belt connects the blower motor to the fan wheel, and if it’s broken or loose, air won’t circulate through the building. Without airflow, the evaporator coil can freeze up — just like what we observed.

Component Replacement and Cleaning

  • Fan Belt Replacement: The old belt was cracked and completely torn (see image 3). We replaced it with a brand-new MEGADYNE A40 belt (image 4), which ensures proper airflow by restoring blower function.
  • Dirty Air Filters: We pulled out the return filters and they were clogged with thick dust and debris (images 5 & 7). These filters were restricting airflow severely. We replaced them with clean, high-efficiency pleated filters to protect the coil and improve airflow.

Refrigerant Gauge Reading

To be thorough, we hooked up our Yellow Jacket manifold gauges (image 8) and checked refrigerant pressure. The readings indicated that the refrigerant level was within manufacturer specs, which ruled out a refrigerant leak as the cause of the icing.

Explanation of Terms

  • Suction Line: This is the larger copper line carrying cool refrigerant gas back to the compressor. If it freezes, something’s wrong with airflow or refrigerant flow.
  • Blower Belt: A rubber loop that turns the fan in belt-driven HVAC systems. Without it, there’s no air movement indoors.
  • Refrigerant Gauges: Tools used to measure pressure inside the refrigerant lines. It helps HVAC techs determine if the system is properly charged or has a leak.

Results

Once the new belt was in place and the filters were replaced, the suction line returned to normal temperature, airflow was restored, and the AC system began cooling the space efficiently again. With improved airflow and a functional blower, the system can now cool more efficiently and avoid future icing problems.

This service is a great reminder of how crucial regular filter replacement and belt inspections are — especially in rooftop units exposed to high heat and dust.
