When a home’s central air conditioner begins to struggle in the Las Vegas heat, it’s often due to a failing outdoor condenser component. In this project, our licensed technicians from Fast Affordable Air performed a detailed HVAC system repair that restored cooling performance, efficiency, and safety for the homeowner.
Step 1: Diagnosing the System
We began by performing an electrical and refrigerant diagnostic using a Fieldpiece SC260 multimeter and Fieldpiece SMAN digital manifold. The multimeter reading showed a current draw of 13.56 amps — this indicates the compressor was pulling a moderate load, suggesting the main power components were still operational. However, the air coming from the supply vent was measured at 89°F, showing that the system was running but not cooling effectively.
To verify refrigerant performance, we checked the pressure readings: low side: 97.4 psi and high side: 263.7 psi. These are typical values for an R-410A system under partial load, confirming that refrigerant flow was present but heat exchange efficiency was compromised — often a sign of a weak fan motor or reduced airflow across the condenser coil.
Step 2: Identifying the Faulty Component
After inspecting the outdoor condenser, we found that the GE 5KCP39 condenser fan motor had worn bearings and reduced torque. This motor is designed to remove heat from the refrigerant coil by drawing air across the fins. When it slows down or stops, the system can’t release heat effectively, leading to higher indoor temperatures and increased compressor strain.
Step 3: Replacing the Fan Motor
We replaced the damaged fan motor with a new energy-efficient model and checked all electrical connections, including the dual run capacitor. The capacitor is a small cylindrical component that stores electrical energy and provides the startup boost required for both the fan and compressor motors. Using our meter, we verified consistent voltage readings of around 134V across the capacitor terminals — within normal range for this setup.
Step 4: System Testing and Final Measurements
Once the new motor was installed and the system reassembled, we re-ran diagnostics. The condenser fan spun smoothly, drawing proper airflow through the coil. The amperage readings stabilized, and refrigerant pressures equalized, indicating improved performance and less compressor load.
We also monitored indoor air temperatures — the vent output began dropping steadily, showing that the air conditioning system was now removing heat effectively. These measurements confirmed that the system was operating within design specifications and delivering reliable cooling once again.
