The capacitor label shows 70+10 MFD, 440VAC. MFD means microfarads, which is the measurement of how much electrical charge the capacitor can hold. The 70 side usually supports the compressor, and the 10 side supports the outdoor fan motor.
The meter readings showed about 9.76 MFD on one side and about 6.92 MFD on the other side. The 9.76 reading is close to the 10 MFD rating, but the 6.92 reading is far below the 70 MFD rating. That is a serious drop. A weak capacitor can make the Air Conditioner struggle to start, make humming sounds, shut down, or overheat important parts.
A weak capacitor is one of the common reasons an AC system fails during hot Las Vegas weather. When outdoor temperatures climb, the central Air Conditioning system already works hard. If the capacitor is weak, the compressor may not get the electrical boost it needs.
Why This Repair Matters
This project was not just about changing a part. The technician checked the whole Cooling system.
