This recent project shows how we diagnosed and repaired two outdoor condenser systems that were struggling to cool properly. The photos you provided help show the entire process. In this repair, the biggest issue was a failing capacitor, which is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner stops running.
What Is a Capacitor and Why It Matters
A capacitor is a small electrical part that gives the compressor and fan motor an extra boost of power when they start. Think of it like a tiny battery that helps the AC get moving. When it becomes weak or fails, the air conditioner may hum, blow warm air, or stop running.
Step 1: Safety and System Access
Before touching anything electrical, we always shut off power at the disconnect box next to the condenser. Your first photo shows the warning label and the capacitor compartment. Safety is always the first step because condensers store high-voltage energy.
With the power off, we removed the access panel to reach the capacitor and wiring. Dust buildup was noticeable, which often happens here in the Las Vegas desert environment.
Step 2: Diagnosing the Faulty Capacitor
Your pictures show a worn-out capacitor with faded labels and discolored connectors. We noticed:
- The capacitor terminals showed signs of overheating.
- Loose or aging wire terminals were connected to the “C”, “HERM”, and “FAN” posts.
- A secondary “hard start kit” (the blue-and-orange SUPCO can) had been installed previously to help the compressor start.
When a capacitor becomes weak, the AC has trouble starting and the system often overheats. This matched the readings we saw from the temperature checks taken from the fan motor area.
Step 3: Temperature Measurements
Using a Klein Tools infrared thermometer, you recorded temperatures on top of the condenser fan. The images showed readings around 158.6°F and 152.2°F, which is extremely hot. High heat like this usually means:
- The fan motor is straining to run.
- The capacitor is not giving the fan the correct power to perform.
- The compressor may also be overheating, reducing the home’s cooling output.
In Las Vegas temperatures, outdoor AC parts already work hard. A bad capacitor adds extra stress.
Step 4: Installing the New Capacitors
The repair involved replacing worn-out capacitors with new ones that matched the correct rating shown on the label. Capacitors must match the exact microfarad (µF) rating or the system can operate poorly or fail.
We secured the new capacitor tightly in place using the factory mounting bracket and reconnected each wire to the correct terminal:
- C for common
- HERM for the compressor
- FAN for the fan motor
Loose, dirty, or incorrectly placed wires can cause dangerous arcing or short circuits, so we ensured all terminals were clean and tightly connected.
Step 5: System Reassembly and Final Check
After replacing the capacitor and verifying the wiring, we reassembled the access panel and restored power. The AC was turned back on so we could observe:
- Fan speed and smoothness
- Compressor start-up strength
- Outdoor unit sound levels
Once the system was operating, we took new readings to confirm the fans were no longer overheating. Lower fan temperatures and stable sound levels indicated the repair was successful.
