On this air conditioning repair visit in the Las Vegas Valley, our Fast Affordable Air technician focused on one of the most common “no cooling” and “weak cooling” causes we see during hot months. The outdoor condenser had electrical components that needed attention, the system needed a careful amp draw check, and the indoor airflow side needed verification so the AC could move enough air through the home.

What we noticed first at the outdoor units
The home has two outdoor condensing units sitting on concrete pads along the exterior wall. We also noticed patio furniture placed very close to the units. This matters because an outdoor condenser needs breathing room. If the unit cannot pull in and push out air freely, it can run hotter, cool worse, and wear out parts faster.
- Why clearance matters: The condenser coil is like a “radiator” that dumps heat outside. When airflow is blocked, the unit struggles to release heat and your central AC performance can drop.
- Simple example: Imagine trying to run while breathing through a pillow. The air conditioner can still run, but it works much harder than it should.
Electrical compartment inspection and safety
After confirming safe access and using proper shutoff procedures, we opened the condenser’s electrical panel. Inside, we inspected the wiring connections, the contactor, and the capacitor. These parts are the “start and run” helpers that allow motors and the compressor to operate correctly.
- Disconnect: The exterior disconnect box is a safety switch that cuts power to the outdoor unit so service can be performed safely.
- Contactor: A heavy-duty electrical switch that receives a low-voltage signal from the thermostat and then sends high voltage to the condenser.
- Dual-run capacitor: A cylinder-shaped part that stores and releases electrical energy to help the compressor and the condenser fan motor start and run smoothly.
Titan HD dual-run capacitor service
One of the close-up photos shows a Titan HD dual-run capacitor labeled 45+5 MFD (also written as µF). In simple terms, it is one capacitor that serves two loads. The larger number is commonly used for the compressor side, and the smaller number is commonly used for the fan motor side. When a capacitor gets weak, you may see symptoms like hard starting, warm air from vents, the outdoor fan struggling, or the system shutting down on hot afternoons.
Note: “MFD” is an older label meaning microfarads (µF). A 45+5 capacitor is very common in many residential HVAC setups.
- What we did: Verified the capacitor rating required for the unit, inspected the terminals and connectors, and ensured the capacitor condition and connections were correct.
- Why it helps: A healthy capacitor helps the compressor and fan motor run efficiently, reduces strain, and improves reliable cooling during peak heat.
Compressor and motor health checks
Another photo shows the compressor area inside the condenser. We checked for obvious signs of damage, rubbed wires, oil residue, and loose connections. We also verified that the system was operating as expected once energized. A compressor is the heart of the cooling cycle, and we want to confirm it is running within normal limits.
- Compressor: Pumps refrigerant through the system so heat can be removed from indoor air and released outdoors.
- Condenser fan motor: Pulls air through the coil so the system can reject heat efficiently.
Amp draw testing with a Fieldpiece clamp meter
One image shows a Fieldpiece clamp meter reading 13.47 amps while the system is running. Amp draw is a key health indicator. It helps us confirm whether the compressor and motors are operating normally or working too hard. We compare measured amperage to the manufacturer’s data plate ratings and to what we typically see for similar systems in Las Vegas conditions.
- Amp draw: The amount of electrical current the equipment is using while running.
- Why it matters: High amps can mean the system is under heavy stress, has airflow issues, has a weak electrical component, or has a mechanical problem.
- Simple example: If a car suddenly needs much more gas to go the same speed, something is making it work harder than normal.
Indoor airflow check at the return grille and filter
Cooling is not only about refrigerant and the outdoor unit. Airflow inside the home is just as important. One photo shows the indoor return grille with the filter visible behind it. If a filter is clogged, the HVAC system cannot move enough air. That can lead to poor comfort, longer run times, and in some cases coil freeze-ups.
- Return air: The air pulled back into the system to be cooled again.
- Air filter: Traps dust and debris so it does not coat the indoor coil and blower wheel.
