Today we worked on a downstairs AC system that was not cooling the way it should. The outdoor unit is a Lennox condenser. It sits in a tight side yard area near a fence, with the refrigerant lines and electrical whip running along the ground. When an air conditioner is in a small space like this, it can be harder for the unit to “breathe” and get rid of heat.
Our goal was simple. Find out why the cooling was struggling, make safe repairs, and help the AC run smoother and more efficiently.
Step 1: Outdoor inspection and safety
We started by checking the area around the unit. We looked for anything that could block airflow, like leaves, dirt, or items stored too close. Air conditioners need open space so the hot air can blow out and away. If hot air gets trapped, the system works harder and may cool less.
Next we verified the power setup. The outdoor disconnect box was clearly labeled “Downstairs,” which is helpful because it reduces mistakes. We still treat every wire like it is live until we confirm power is safely shut off.
Disconnect box means a small outdoor switch box that lets a technician shut power off to the AC unit. It is like a safety on-off switch right next to the system.
Step 2: Confirm equipment details
We checked the nameplate on the Lennox unit to confirm the model information and refrigerant type. This matters because the refrigerant type changes how we test and what pressure ranges we expect.
This unit uses HCFC-22 (R-22), which is an older refrigerant. Many older systems in Las Vegas still use R-22. Because R-22 is no longer produced in the same way it once was, it can be more expensive and harder to source. That makes leak checks and careful testing even more important.
Refrigerant is the special fluid inside the AC that carries heat. The AC does not “make cold.” It moves heat from inside your home to outside.
Step 3: Connect gauges and check system pressures
After the visual checks, we connected our service gauges to the outdoor unit. You can see the hoses connected at the service ports. This lets us read the refrigerant pressures while the system is running.
Service ports are small valves on the refrigerant lines where a technician can attach gauges. Think of them like check points for the system.
We use the pressure readings along with outdoor temperature to help us understand what the system is doing. Low cooling can be caused by more than one thing, like low refrigerant, a dirty condenser coil, weak airflow indoors, or failing electrical parts.
We also watch for signs like:
- Abnormal pressure readings
- Unit struggling to start
- Fan or compressor sounding rough
- Ice on the refrigerant lines
- Very hot air blowing out the top
Step 4: Check the refrigerant line insulation
We inspected the refrigerant lines near the unit. The larger copper line is the suction line, and it is usually wrapped with insulation. That insulation helps keep the refrigerant cold as it travels back to the unit. In the photos, you can see sections where the insulation looks worn and exposed.
Suction line is the bigger copper pipe that carries cool refrigerant back to the outdoor unit.
If the insulation is damaged, it can cause extra heat gain from the hot outdoor air. That can lower efficiency and sometimes cause sweating or moisture issues. Replacing insulation is a simple improvement that helps the system run better in extreme heat.
Step 5: Coil condition and airflow around the unit
The condenser coil is the “radiator” on the outside unit. Air must pass through that coil to release heat. In dusty areas, coils can get coated with dirt and grime. Even a thin layer can reduce heat transfer.
Condenser coil is the outdoor coil where the AC dumps heat outside.
When coils are dirty, the system may:
- Run longer to cool the home
- Use more electricity
- Put more stress on the compressor
- Struggle during the hottest part of the day
We make sure the coil has good airflow and the surrounding area is not trapping heat. Tight spaces, fences, and stored items can all reduce performance.
Step 6: Electrical quick-check
Outdoor units have key electrical parts that must work correctly. Two common parts are the capacitor and the contactor.
Capacitor is like a small battery that helps the motor start and run smoothly. If it gets weak, the system may have trouble starting or the fan may run poorly.
Contactor is an electrical switch that turns the outdoor unit on when the thermostat calls for cooling.
We inspect wiring condition, look for corrosion, and check that connections are secure. Small electrical issues can cause big cooling problems, especially in hot Las Vegas weather.
