This air conditioning repair project focused on an older outdoor Tempstar condensing unit that was struggling with efficiency and needed electrical testing, capacitor replacement, and condenser coil cleaning. In Southern Nevada, older central AC and Heating and Cooling systems often fight dust, heat, and normal wear. That combination can make a home feel warmer inside and can force the Air Conditioner to work harder than it should.
For this job, the technician started with a full look at the outdoor cooling unit. The cabinet showed age, and the condenser coil had visible dirt buildup. A condenser coil is the outside metal coil that releases heat from the home. When that coil gets packed with dust and debris, the system has a harder time moving heat out of the house. That can lower Cooling performance and raise energy use.
The outdoor unit was carefully inspected from multiple sides to check overall condition, airflow space, coil cleanliness, and the general state of the equipment. This kind of visual inspection matters because an older central Air Conditioner can have more than one issue at the same time. A unit may still run, but that does not always mean it is running well.
After the visual inspection, electrical testing was performed on the capacitor. A capacitor is a small electrical part that helps a motor start and keep running properly. Think of it like a quick energy boost for the fan motor or compressor. In the photo, the existing capacitor was tested with a Fieldpiece meter and showed a reading of about 3.401 on a capacitor rated for 5 MFD. MFD means microfarads, which is the unit used to measure capacitor strength. That reading showed the part was weak and no longer performing at its rated value.
The failed part was a 5 MFD 440VAC capacitor. That type of part is commonly used to support the outdoor fan motor on some AC systems. When a capacitor gets weak, the fan motor may struggle to start, run hotter, or operate less efficiently. That can put extra stress on the whole HVAC system, especially during long hot afternoons in Las Vegas.
Once testing confirmed the weak capacitor, the old part was removed and replaced with a matching new capacitor. Using the right rating is important. A mismatched capacitor can cause poor motor operation, overheating, or early part failure. After replacement, the wiring inside the service panel was secured and organized so the system could operate safely and cleanly.
The technician also checked the electrical compartment where the contactor and capacitor are located. A contactor is the switch that tells the outdoor unit when to turn on. It is controlled by the thermostat and lets high voltage power flow to the equipment. Inspecting this area helps make sure the central Cooling system is not only running, but running safely.
Next came coil cleaning. The outdoor condenser coil was washed down to remove dirt and grime that had collected over time. This step is very important on older air conditioning systems. When the coil is dirty, heat gets trapped more easily, head pressure can rise, and the Air Conditioner may lose efficiency. Cleaning the coil helps the equipment breathe better and release heat faster.
With a cleaner coil and a new capacitor in place, the system can usually run with less strain on the fan motor and better heat transfer through the outdoor unit. That can improve comfort indoors and may help reduce unnecessary power use. It also gives the equipment a better chance of surviving heavy summer demand.
An indoor temperature reading of about 83.7°F was also documented during the job. That reading helped show the indoor comfort condition at the time of service. On calls like this, combining indoor readings with outdoor equipment testing gives a clearer picture of how the full HVAC system is behaving.
