In this project, we worked on the maintenance and repair of a central air conditioning unit at a residential property in Las Vegas, NV. The unit, a Goodman AC system, was experiencing inefficiencies due to poor insulation and wear on essential components. Our task involved inspecting the unit, performing necessary repairs, and optimizing its performance to ensure maximum cooling efficiency and energy savings.
Initial Inspection
Upon arriving at the property, our first step was to conduct a thorough inspection of the central AC unit. The homeowner had noticed a decrease in cooling performance and an increase in energy bills, which often indicates issues like refrigerant leaks, poor insulation, or blocked airflow.
One of the immediate concerns we identified was the condition of the insulation on the refrigerant lines. As seen in the first image, the insulation was heavily worn and improperly secured, leading to potential energy loss. Proper insulation is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of the cooling system, as it prevents the refrigerant from absorbing heat before it reaches the evaporator coil.
Repair Process
Replacing the Insulation: The first task was to replace the deteriorated insulation on the refrigerant lines. We used high-quality foam insulation that is designed specifically for HVAC applications. This type of insulation is resistant to UV rays and extreme temperatures, ensuring long-lasting protection. We carefully wrapped the refrigerant lines, ensuring that there were no gaps that could lead to energy loss.
Securing the Unit: In the second and third images, it is evident that the AC unit was not properly leveled, which can cause issues with the compressor over time. A poorly leveled unit can lead to vibrations, which may cause damage to internal components and reduce the lifespan of the system. We adjusted the positioning of the unit and secured it with bricks to stabilize it temporarily. This ensures that the unit operates smoothly without unnecessary strain.
Checking the Refrigerant Levels: After securing the unit and improving the insulation, we checked the refrigerant levels. The refrigerant is the lifeblood of the air conditioning system, responsible for absorbing and dissipating heat. Low refrigerant levels can cause the AC to run inefficiently, increasing energy consumption and reducing cooling output. We topped up the refrigerant to the optimal level, ensuring that the system would operate at peak efficiency.
Testing the System: Once all repairs were completed, we turned the system back on and monitored its performance. The unit was now running quieter and more efficiently, with improved cooling capacity. The homeowner immediately noticed the difference, reporting that the indoor temperature was more consistent and comfortable.
