Air Conditioning Repair Project: Condenser Fan Motor & Capacitor Replacement

Fast Affordable Air – Las Vegas HVAC Experts

Understanding the Problem

A homeowner in Las Vegas, NV called Fast Affordable Air to inspect an air conditioning unit that wasn’t cooling efficiently. After running diagnostics, our HVAC technician identified two key issues:

  • A failing condenser fan motor
  • A damaged dual-run capacitor

These two components are critical in keeping the AC running smoothly. The condenser fan motor helps dissipate heat from the refrigerant, while the capacitor provides the necessary power boost to start and run the compressor and fan.

The Repair Process

Our team followed a structured approach to diagnose and repair the system:

1. Inspecting the Condenser Fan Motor

The first image shows the condenser fan motor, an essential part of the outdoor unit. A malfunctioning fan motor can lead to:

  • Overheating of the compressor
  • Increased energy consumption
  • Reduced cooling efficiency

Our technician confirmed that the motor was running inconsistently, leading to system strain.

2. Checking the Capacitor

In the third and sixth images, you can see the old capacitor removed from the unit. The visible rust and corrosion on the terminals indicated deterioration, affecting the motor’s performance.

We replaced the failing GE capacitor (37.5/5 MFD, 370V) with a brand-new NGM capacitor (45+5 MFD, 440V), visible in the fifth image. Upgrading to a higher-rated capacitor enhances reliability and extends the lifespan of the AC system.

3. Installing the New Components

  • Replaced the old capacitor: The new dual-run capacitor ensures both the compressor and fan motor receive the necessary power boost.
  • Installed a new condenser fan motor: This ensures proper airflow to keep the refrigerant cool.
  • Tested the system: Once installed, our technician restarted the unit and confirmed smooth operation with proper amp draw.

Benefits of This Repair

  • ✅ Restored Cooling Efficiency: The AC now provides consistent cooling, preventing temperature fluctuations.
  • ✅ Energy Savings: A properly functioning motor and capacitor prevent excessive power draw, reducing electricity bills.
  • ✅ Longer System Lifespan: Regular maintenance and timely part replacement prevent compressor burnout, avoiding costly repairs.
