At Fast Affordable Air, we were called out to repair a central air conditioning system in Las Vegas that was struggling to cool properly. Our goal was to restore reliable comfort while making sure the system worked efficiently and safely.
Step 1: Inspecting the Air Handler and Filter
We began inside at the air handler unit. This is the indoor part of the HVAC system that pushes air through the ducts. Right away, we found a very dirty filter (16x20x1). A clogged filter limits airflow, making the AC work harder and reducing cooling performance. Changing air filters regularly is one of the simplest ways to keep a system running smoothly.
Step 2: Checking Electrical Readings
Next, we used a multimeter to check electrical values. The readings showed the system was pulling 368 volts during operation. Consistent voltage supply is important for safe operation and helps prevent overheating of electrical components.
Step 3: Refrigerant Pressure Test
With our Fieldpiece SMAN Refrigerant Manifold, we checked refrigerant pressures. The low side pressure was about 54 psi, and the high side was 221.9 psi. This indicated the system still had a proper refrigerant charge, which is critical for heat transfer. If refrigerant levels drop, the AC won’t cool effectively and could damage the compressor.
Step 4: Temperature Readings
We measured air temperature at the return (where warm air enters the system) and at the supply vents (where cool air comes out). The return was reading 82.0°F, while the supply vent was 68.4°F. This 13–14 degree difference is a good sign that the system is cooling, though a clean filter will improve performance even further.
Step 5: Capacitor Replacement
Outside at the condenser unit, we inspected a General Electric capacitor rated 4 μF at 370 VAC. A capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to help motors start and run efficiently. When these weaken, the fan or compressor can fail to start. Replacing a weak capacitor prevents breakdowns and keeps the system efficient.
