Fast Affordable Air was called to a home in Las Vegas because the Air Conditioner was not cooling well. When we arrived, the indoor air coming from the vent was around 70.7°F. For a healthy Cooling system, the supply air should usually be much colder. This told us the home’s central AC needed attention.
Our team inspected the outdoor condenser unit, which is an older Lennox model. We also checked the indoor vent temperatures using an infrared thermometer. You can see the first reading taken near the return grille that shows 70.7°F. This is too warm to provide comfort on hot Las Vegas days. We needed to diagnose why the Air Conditioning system was struggling.
Finding the Problem
After opening the outdoor condenser cabinet, we quickly found the cause. The system’s dual-run capacitor was worn out. A capacitor helps start and run the compressor and the fan motor. If it is weak or broken, the AC cannot cool the home properly.
In the pictures, you can see the original capacitor. The wires were connected, but the part itself was clearly old and had been replaced in the past. The label showed it was rated for 45+5 microfarads (µF). Microfarads are a unit that measures how much electrical charge the capacitor can hold. If the number drops too low, the part no longer works well.
Installing the New Capacitor
We removed the failing part and installed a new 45+5 µF 440VAC capacitor. This rating matches the Air Conditioning system’s requirements, so it works safely with the compressor and fan motor. We made sure each wire was connected to the correct terminal. The marked terminals are “HERM” for the compressor, “FAN” for the fan motor, and “C” for common.
A dual-run capacitor is an important part inside any central Air Conditioner. It stores energy like a small battery and gives the compressor and fan the boost they need to start running. Without the boost, the AC may blow warm air, make humming sounds, or stop running.
Testing the Cooling System
Once we installed the new capacitor, we turned the system back on and checked the indoor temperature again. The second infrared thermometer reading shows 59.4°F coming out of the supply vent. This is a big improvement compared to the earlier 70.7°F reading.
A drop of more than ten degrees tells us the Air Conditioning system is back to Cooling the home correctly. This also means the compressor and fan are now running at the right speed and strength.
