Air Conditioning Repair Project in Las Vegas: Outdoor AC Diagnostics and Attic Furnace Inspection

This Heating and Cooling project took place in a Las Vegas home where the customer noticed weak Cooling and warm air blowing from the vents. Our team at Fast Affordable Air inspected both the outdoor Air Conditioner and the attic air handler to find out what was causing the problem.

Checking the Outdoor AC Unit

The first step was to visit the outside of the home where the central AC unit sits on a gravel yard. The photo shows our gauge set connected to the refrigerant ports. We checked the Air Conditioner’s refrigerant pressures using a tool called a manifold gauge. A manifold gauge gives us two readings:

  • Low side pressure (the blue gauge), which helps us know how the AC removes heat from the home
  • High side pressure (the red gauge), which shows how well the system pushes heat outdoors

The readings suggested that the system was not running at its best. The low side gauge showed lower-than-normal numbers, which often means the system could be slightly undercharged or the airflow inside the home may be reduced. Airflow problems can happen from dirty filters, clogged coils, or issues inside the attic unit.

We also opened the electrical panel and inspected the capacitor. A capacitor is a small metal cylinder that acts like a battery. It gives the condenser fan and compressor a boost of power when they start. When a capacitor becomes weak or damaged, the AC may have trouble turning on or may cool poorly.

The photos show the capacitor wiring and terminals. They appeared worn and slightly corroded, which can reduce performance. Capacitor issues are one of the most common AC repair problems in Las Vegas because of high outdoor heat.

Inspecting the Attic Furnace and Air Handler

Next, we moved into the attic where the furnace and evaporator coil are located. This attic system is installed on a platform between the roof framing, and it connects to multiple duct lines that bring air throughout the home.

We checked the air handler housing, blower section, and return plenum for air leaks. Air leaks can let hot attic air mix with the cooled indoor air, which reduces efficiency. Good airflow is extremely important for central Air Conditioning to work correctly.

The system also has a ZoneFirst zoning control box. A zoning control system lets different parts of the home receive different amounts of Cooling or Heating. For example, one zone may cool upstairs bedrooms and another zone may cool the downstairs area. This helps save energy and makes the home more comfortable.

We inspected the wiring and operation lights on the zoning panel. Everything appeared functional, but we also checked the duct connections to make sure each zone damper was receiving enough airflow.

Why These Steps Matter

When an Air Conditioner does not cool properly, the problem is usually caused by one of three things:

  • Low refrigerant or refrigerant restrictions
  • Electrical problems such as weak capacitors
  • Airflow issues in the attic or inside the furnace

By checking all three areas, we can make sure the entire HVAC system is operating together correctly. A home in Las Vegas needs strong Cooling, especially with temperatures often rising above 110°F in the summer. A well-maintained central Air Conditioning system helps:

  • Lower energy bills since the AC doesn’t struggle as hard
  • Improve indoor comfort and colder air from the vents
  • Prevent early equipment failure, especially the compressor
  • Keep each zone of the home consistent in temperature

Small parts such as capacitors can cause big performance problems, so inspecting them early helps avoid expensive repairs later. Checking both the outdoor and attic units ensures that nothing is missed. The homeowner received stronger Cooling after adjustments were made, and the system’s airflow improved.
