Air Conditioning Repair Project Overview: Pressure Testing and Leak Detection

At Fast Affordable Air, we recently completed a significant project involving a rooftop air conditioning unit in Las Vegas. This system showed signs of refrigerant leakage, which required a meticulous approach to diagnose and repair. Below, we will walk through the steps taken, based on the visual evidence from the project, to ensure the air conditioning system was operating efficiently and safely.

The Inspection Phase

Upon arriving at the site, we observed the rooftop unit showing clear signs of wear and potential damage. The first image highlights some oil stains around the base of the unit, which can be an indicator of refrigerant leakage. Refrigerant carries a small amount of oil, so leaks often leave oil residue around the compromised area.

We began the inspection by checking the external components of the unit, specifically the condenser coils, as these are often a common source of leaks. In one of the images, you can see the rooftop AC unit under bright sunlight. The UV light can accelerate the wear on various components, leading to leaks over time.

Pressure Test for Leak Detection

To accurately pinpoint where the refrigerant leak was occurring, we performed a pressure test. This involves using specialized equipment to pressurize the system with nitrogen or another inert gas. The images provided (pressure test images 1-5) show the setup of this process, where we connected our gauges and hoses to the refrigerant lines of the unit.

Why pressure test?

  • Pressure testing allows us to simulate normal operating conditions without introducing more refrigerant. This test helps identify areas where the system loses pressure, signaling a potential leak.
  • By pressurizing the system to above normal operating levels, any weak points or leaks are exposed as they will allow the gas to escape.

During the process, we closely monitored the gauges to see if there was any loss of pressure, indicating a leak. We also utilized a bubble test, applying a soapy solution to the joints and connections. If bubbles formed, it confirmed the presence of a leak.

The Findings: A Faulty Joint and Coil Damage

After running the pressure test, we identified the source of the leak. The joint near the condenser coil had a slow leak, contributing to the refrigerant loss over time. Furthermore, some wear and tear on the coil itself required attention.

We ensured all affected areas were repaired using [Brand Name] high-quality components, which are specifically designed for extreme desert climates like Las Vegas. The damaged joint was brazed to restore its integrity, and the coils were repaired to prevent future leaks.
