At Fast Affordable Air, we were recently called to a home in Clark County where the air conditioner was struggling to keep the house cool. The thermostat was stuck at 81°F, even though the system had been running for hours. After a quick inspection, we discovered that the problem was deeper than just a clogged filter or a weak fan.
Step 1: Inspecting the Indoor HVAC System
The first stop was the attic, where the home’s Bryant central air conditioning furnace was installed. This furnace acts as the indoor part of the HVAC system, circulating cooled air through large insulated ducts (sometimes called flex ducts). Everything here looked sealed and properly insulated, which meant the problem was not with air distribution.
Step 2: Checking the Thermostat
The thermostat showed that the system was running but could not lower the temperature. This is a common sign that the outdoor condenser is not working correctly. The condenser is the unit outside the home that releases heat from inside the house. If it fails, the AC will blow warm air no matter how long it runs.
Step 3: Outdoor Unit Diagnosis
Outside, we inspected the two condenser units. These are responsible for the heavy lifting of cooling by removing heat from the refrigerant. One of the units showed signs of age and rust on the fan guard. The more serious issue was inside the electrical compartment: burned wires and a damaged contactor.
A contactor is an electrical switch that controls the flow of power to the compressor and fan motor. If it burns out, the condenser will not turn on. Alongside this, the wiring had melted insulation, which is both a performance and safety hazard. A faulty contactor can also overheat wires, leading to the kind of blackened, brittle wiring we found in this system.
Step 4: Replacing Components
We safely removed the burned wiring and installed new, properly rated wires. The damaged contactor was replaced with a new one designed for the unit’s amperage. We also checked the capacitor—a small cylinder that stores electrical energy and helps the motor start. Weak or failing capacitors are another common cause of air conditioning problems.
By installing new components and securing the connections, we ensured that power could safely and reliably reach the compressor and fan motor. This allowed the outdoor condenser to start up as it should.
Step 5: Testing and Results
Once repairs were complete, we restarted the system and monitored both indoor and outdoor equipment. The condenser fans spun smoothly, the compressor engaged, and the indoor temperature began to drop steadily. The home quickly went from an uncomfortable 81°F back to a cool, comfortable level.
