In Las Vegas, a lot of AC problems start in a place most people never look. The attic. Heat builds up fast up there, and small airflow leaks can turn into big comfort issues. In this project, Fast Affordable Air inspected the attic ductwork and the indoor equipment area, then repaired weak spots that were wasting cooled air and risking water damage.
This job focused on two main things. First was the duct connection at a boxed plenum (the main air box that feeds air into the duct system). Second was the condensate drain area (the pipes that carry away the water your air conditioner pulls out of the air).
What we saw during the attic inspection
- Large insulated flexible duct (flex duct) with bends and sagging that can slow airflow.
- A round duct connection going into a square duct box with heavy sealant around the collar.
- A close-up view inside the round duct collar showing the duct liner and connection edge.
- PVC condensate drain piping coming out of the unit with glued fittings and support straps nearby.
- Water staining around the drain area which can be a clue that water has overflowed or splashed before.
Flex duct is the bendy, insulated duct you often see in attics. It is great for routing air, but it needs to be supported well. If it gets crushed, kinked, or droops too much, it can act like stepping on a garden hose and the airflow drops.
Plenum is the main air “box” connected to the indoor air handler or furnace. Think of it like the big trunk of a tree. Smaller ducts branch off from it to feed each room.
Step 1: Checking airflow paths and duct connections
We started by tracing the main duct run and looking at how the flex duct connected to the plenum. The photos show a large flex duct running along the attic floor and turning toward a square, foil-faced duct box. At the connection point, we inspected the duct collar and the seal around it.
When duct connections are not tight, cooled air can leak out into the attic instead of going to the bedrooms and living areas. That means the central AC runs longer, energy bills go up, and some rooms feel warmer than others. Sealing the connection correctly helps keep the cooling where it belongs.
In this project, the connection area had thick sealant around the round takeoff. We checked for gaps, loose edges, and weak spots that could open up over time. We also checked the flex duct for tightness around the collar and made sure the insulation jacket stayed pulled over the connection.
Mastic is a thick paste-like sealant HVAC techs brush on duct seams to stop air leaks. It dries like a strong rubber coating. It is different from regular “tape” because it fills small gaps and holds up better in hot attic conditions. You can learn more about duct leak fixes here:
Step 2: Making sure the flex duct is shaped and supported correctly
Next we looked at the flex duct shape. Even if the duct is connected tightly, airflow can still suffer if the duct is pinched or bent too hard. We want smoother turns, fewer sharp bends, and solid support so the duct does not sag down.
Why that matters is simple. Air moves best through a duct when the duct stays round and open. A sagging section can create a “low spot” where air slows down and the insulation jacket can get stressed. Proper support helps keep airflow stronger and helps the home cool more evenly.
Step 3: Inspecting the condensate drain area
Air conditioners do more than cool. They also remove moisture from the air. That moisture turns into water and must drain out safely. The PVC piping shown in the photos is the condensate drain line.
We inspected the drain connections where the lines exit the unit cabinet. Many systems have a primary drain and a secondary drain. The primary drain is the main path for water. The secondary drain is a backup in case the primary gets clogged.
Condensate means the water created when warm, humid air hits the cold evaporator coil. A good example is the water droplets on a cold soda can. Your AC creates that same kind of water during normal operation.
In the pictures, there is visible staining on the surface under the drain area. Staining does not always mean there is an active leak right now, but it is a sign that water may have overflowed before. That can happen when a drain line partially clogs, when the system is not level, or when the drain trap is not set up correctly for the type of unit.
We checked the drain fittings, looked for cracks, and confirmed the lines were routed so water can flow downhill. We also checked that the piping was supported so the weight of the pipe does not stress the connection at the unit.
If a condensate line backs up, water can spill into the attic area and damage drywall ceilings, insulation, and wood. Keeping the drain system clean and correctly routed protects the home.
Step 4: Sealing around cabinet penetrations and connection points
Besides the duct joints, we also pay attention to openings where air can leak. Any small gap between a duct collar and the plenum, or around cabinet edges, can become a sneaky air loss point. Air leaks waste energy and can pull dusty attic air into the system.
