Attic Air Conditioning Repair on a Rheem System in Las Vegas

This project took place inside a warm attic in Las Vegas, where the home’s Rheem central air conditioning system was having trouble keeping up with the heat. The homeowner noticed weak airflow and uneven Cooling throughout the house. When our technician from Fast Affordable Air inspected the system, multiple issues were also found that needed professional attention.

Vacuum Pump and Micron Reading

One of the most important steps in an HVAC repair is making sure the refrigerant lines are completely free of air and moisture. The gauge in the photo shows a micron reading of 415 microns. A “micron” is a very tiny measurement that tells us how deep the vacuum is when we remove air and moisture from the AC system. For most air conditioners, anything under 500 microns is considered a proper deep vacuum.

The display also shows -27 per minute, which means the vacuum level was stable and not rising. When the number goes up, it means there is a leak or moisture inside the system. Since the number stayed steady, the technician confirmed the system was tight and safe to recharge.

Removing moisture is important because water inside a Cooling system can freeze or mix with refrigerant and damage the compressor. A clean and dry system keeps everything running efficiently and helps the AC last longer.

Attic Air Handler and Duct System Inspection

The next step was checking the air handler, which is the large metal box in the attic that pushes air through the home. This Rheem air handler is hung on metal straps, and multiple insulated ducts are connected to it. The technician inspected the connections to make sure there were no air leaks.

A common HVAC term here is “supply plenum”. The plenum is the rectangular box that sits on top of the air handler and distributes cooled air into the ducts. If this box leaks, cold air spills into the attic instead of going into the house. The photos show the plenum sealed with mastic and foil insulation to help maintain proper air pressure.

Refrigerant Lines and Insulation

The refrigerant lines were also checked. These are the copper pipes wrapped with black insulation. These lines carry refrigerant from the indoor coil to the outdoor condenser. Insulation helps prevent sweating and keeps the refrigerant at the correct temperature as it moves through the system.

Proper insulation avoids water dripping in the attic and improves Cooling performance. Since Las Vegas gets extremely hot, the insulation must stay in good condition to prevent heat from entering the lines.

Condensate Drain Line Inspection

The photos also show multiple white PVC pipes. These are the condensate drain lines. The drain line removes water created when warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil. If the drain becomes clogged, water can overflow into the attic and cause damage.

During this project the technician made sure all drain lines were clear and flowing properly. Slow drainage is a common problem in humid climates, even here in Las Vegas during monsoon season.

Electrical Components and Safety Checks

The air handler had exposed wiring that needed securing and confirming proper voltages. HVAC systems use low-voltage and high-voltage wiring. Low-voltage wiring sends small signals to control the thermostat and furnace, while high-voltage wiring powers motors and heating elements.

A loose or damaged wire can cause intermittent Cooling, short cycling, or tripped breakers. Securing these wires improves system safety and keeps the unit running smoothly.

Why This Repair Matters

When everything inside the attic system is working correctly, the home receives strong Cooling and the AC doesn’t have to work as hard. The deeper vacuum, tight duct sealing, clean drain lines, and secured wiring all help the system run more efficiently. This can also reduce energy bills because the central Air Conditioner doesn’t waste power fighting hidden issues.
