Central AC Repair in Las Vegas: From Weak Power to Full Cooling Performance

At Fast Affordable Air, our licensed HVAC technicians are often called out for cooling system issues that need both electrical diagnostics and mechanical repairs. This project involved a central air conditioning system that was struggling to keep the home comfortable. By carefully inspecting the unit, testing components, and making replacements, we were able to restore full operation and improve efficiency for our customer.

Initial Electrical Testing

The first step was measuring amperage and voltage with a multimeter. The Fieldpiece SC260 meter gave us a reading of 0.61 amps at one stage of the test. Later, after repairs, the system pulled 8.53 amps. Amperage readings like these tell us how much electrical current the air conditioner is drawing. If the reading is too low or too high, it can signal problems such as a failing capacitor, weak compressor, or electrical imbalance.

Disconnect and Electrical Safety

The system’s disconnect block, shown in the pictures, is a safety component that allows technicians to shut off high-voltage power to the air conditioner while performing maintenance. Some of the copper contacts inside the disconnect were showing signs of wear. Replacing worn disconnect parts prevents overheating and ensures solid electrical connections.

Capacitor Replacement

One of the most important parts inside any HVAC system is the capacitor. This project used a Capcom 45+5 µF 370VAC dual-run capacitor. A capacitor stores and releases energy to help motors start and run efficiently. The “dual-run” style means it supports both the compressor (the heart of the air conditioner) and the fan motor. Over time, capacitors weaken and lose their ability to hold charge, which can cause the fan or compressor to struggle. By replacing the capacitor, we ensured the central AC could start smoothly and operate without strain.

Refrigerant Pressure Testing

We connected a Fieldpiece SMAN digital manifold gauge to check refrigerant levels. The system was operating with R-410A refrigerant. The gauges showed a suction pressure of about 206 psi and a head pressure of about 207 psi, along with superheat and subcool readings.

  • Superheat (SH) – measured at 20.2°F. This value shows how much the refrigerant has warmed above its boiling point in the evaporator coil. Proper superheat prevents liquid refrigerant from damaging the compressor.
  • Subcool (SC) – measured at -18.7°F (below typical range). Subcooling tells us how much refrigerant has cooled below its condensing temperature. An abnormal value can indicate undercharge, restriction, or metering device issues.

By analyzing these numbers, we determined adjustments and confirmed that refrigerant flow was within safe operating ranges once the capacitor and electrical issues were corrected.

System Performance After Repair

After completing the capacitor replacement, securing the disconnect, and verifying refrigerant levels, we re-tested electrical draw. The air conditioner was now pulling a normal operating current of 8.53 amps, showing that the motors were running as expected. With steady refrigerant pressures and safe electrical performance, the central cooling system was back to delivering consistent comfort.
