Central Air Conditioning Repair in Las Vegas – Rheem System Diagnostics & Service

At Fast Affordable Air, we recently worked on a Rheem central air conditioning system at a home in the Las Vegas area. The homeowner reported that the cooling performance had dropped, and the system was running longer than usual. Our inspection and testing process helped identify the issue and restore the AC to peak performance.

Initial Inspection

The outdoor unit’s model number, RA1460AJ1NA, confirmed it was a 5-ton Rheem system. These systems are built for durability but still require regular maintenance and occasional repairs. We began by checking the electrical components, refrigerant pressures, and airflow performance.

Temperature & Airflow Checks

Using our Fieldpiece SC260 meter, we recorded an outdoor coil temperature of 84.0°F. This temperature reading helps us understand how well heat is being rejected from the refrigerant into the outside air. If the temperature is too high, it can indicate restricted airflow or dirty condenser coils.

Electrical Diagnostics

We measured compressor and fan motor amperage at 1.15A during startup. This reading is well within the normal operating range for this size unit, confirming the motors are not under excessive load. Any unusually high or low readings here could signal a motor issue or electrical imbalance.

Capacitor Testing

The dual-run capacitor, rated at 45+5 μF (microfarads), was tested to ensure it was within tolerance. A capacitor stores and releases energy to help motors start and run efficiently. Our meter read 45.5 μF on the compressor side, which is right on target. A weak capacitor can cause hard starting, reduced efficiency, and even compressor damage if left unaddressed.

Refrigerant Pressure Readings

We connected our Yellow Jacket manifold gauges to measure refrigerant pressures for this R-410A system. Readings showed the low side at approximately 118 psi and the high side around 370 psi. These numbers, along with temperature readings, help determine if the refrigerant charge is correct and if the system is operating efficiently.

In HVAC, proper refrigerant charge is crucial. Too little refrigerant can cause poor cooling and compressor overheating, while too much can reduce efficiency and risk system damage.

Component Inspection

Inside the electrical panel, we visually inspected the contactor (which controls the compressor and fan motor operation) and wiring. All connections were secure, with no signs of overheating, corrosion, or damage. A clean and properly wired control compartment ensures safe and reliable operation.
