Diagnosing and Repairing a Central Air Conditioning System in Las Vegas

At Fast Affordable Air, we specialize in troubleshooting and repairing all kinds of HVAC systems in the Las Vegas valley. This recent project involved servicing a Rheem outdoor condenser unit at a residential property in Clark County. The homeowner reported that the AC wasn’t cooling properly, so we performed a full system diagnostic to locate the issue.

Step 1: Initial Diagnostic and Gauge Setup

We began by connecting our Yellow Jacket manifold gauge set to the service ports of the condenser. These gauges help us monitor refrigerant pressures on both the high (red) and low (blue) sides of the system. The first reading showed pressure imbalances — low-side around 50 psi and high-side near 250 psi, which hinted at a possible electrical or refrigerant issue.

Step 2: Opening the Electrical Panel

Next, we opened the electrical panel of the condenser to inspect the capacitor and contactor. The capacitor is a small cylindrical component that stores and releases electrical energy to help motors start and run efficiently. This Rheem unit uses a dual-run capacitor, which powers both the compressor and the fan motor.

Step 3: Capacitor Testing

Using a multimeter set to microfarads (µF), we tested the terminals of the dual-run capacitor. Proper readings should closely match the label (for example, 45+5 µF). If the readings fall below 6% of the rated value, it means the capacitor is weak or failing. In this case, our readings were below spec, confirming the capacitor needed replacement.

Step 4: Replacing the Faulty Capacitor

We installed a new dual-run capacitor and rechecked all connections for safety and reliability. We also inspected the contactor, which is responsible for sending voltage to the compressor and fan motor when the thermostat calls for cooling. Everything else checked out properly.

Step 5: System Re-Evaluation with Refrigerant Gauges

After replacing the capacitor, we reconnected our gauges and tested the system again. The pressure stabilized — the low-side measured approximately 120 psi and the high-side was around 310 psi, both within the acceptable range for R-410A refrigerant under the current ambient temperature.

Capacitors are a common failure point in residential central air conditioners, especially in the hot and dry climate of Las Vegas and Henderson. A weak capacitor can cause your system to short cycle, struggle to start, or completely shut down. By addressing the issue early, we helped restore full cooling performance while avoiding major component failure like a burnt-out compressor — which would be far more expensive to replace.
