How We Brought Comfort Back with an AC Repair in Clark County

At Fast Affordable Air, we recently worked on an air conditioning system that wasn’t cooling properly. The unit was located outside a Las Vegas home and had a few issues that needed attention. With the high desert temperatures in Henderson, North Las Vegas, and the rest of Clark County, having reliable cooling is critical. Let’s walk through the steps of this repair project.

Step 1: Inspecting the Capacitor

The first component we checked was the capacitor. A capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to help start the compressor and fan motor. If it weakens or fails, the AC may hum, struggle to start, or not cool effectively. In the photo, you can see the dual-run capacitor with wires connected. We tested it to make sure it matched the manufacturer’s required microfarad rating. A faulty capacitor can cause the fan or compressor to draw more power than needed, leading to higher electric bills or system breakdowns.

Step 2: Measuring Refrigerant Pressures

Next, we connected our manifold gauge set. These gauges help us measure refrigerant pressures on both the low side (blue) and high side (red). This system uses R-410A refrigerant. By checking the pressure levels, we can tell if the system has the correct charge, if there might be a leak, or if there are blockages. In this case, the readings showed normal operating ranges once the system was running correctly.

Step 3: Electrical Diagnostics

We then used a clamp meter to measure amperage (electrical current) on the compressor and fan circuits. The display shows the actual amps being drawn compared to the equipment’s rated amps listed on the nameplate. If the current is too high, it often points to an overworked motor or electrical imbalance. Low readings can mean the system isn’t engaging properly. Keeping these numbers in line with specifications protects both the equipment and the customer’s power bills.

Step 4: System Verification

After repairs and adjustments, we cycled the AC system back on and monitored it. The refrigerant pressures stabilized, the capacitor was functioning properly, and the compressor and fan motor were operating within safe electrical limits. This means the central air conditioner could now deliver cool, steady airflow through the home.
